Hello All,

I will be leading a moderately strenuous hike at Huddart Park on Sat. Aug. 7. Huddart Park outside Woodside is a lovely treasure with deep woods and hidden creeks. Our route will be shaded by redwoods which will keep us nice and cool on a summer day. Total miles hiked will be 7.5 miles with an elevation gain of 1500 feet. Note that the hike will be starting at 11 AM rather than our usual start time of 9:30 AM. The estimated finish time is about 4:30 - 5:00 PM. Details of the hike are included below...

I hope you can join us. Your Organizer,

RAIN CANCELS.... In case of doubt, call my cell phone # (listed below) after 9 PM on the night before the hike. I will leave an outgoing message with any notices about hike cancellation due to weather. Meet: 11:00 am at the California Avenue Caltrain Station, 101 S. California Ave.,
Palo Alto (meet on platform side of parking lot near middle where
underpass is located) to carpool. 11:45 AM at Zwierlein Picnic Area parking lot Estimated finish time: 4:30 - 5:00 PM (back at trailhead) bring: lunch, sunscreen, plenty of water, coat, all the usual stuff.

We will be exploring the Huddart Park Loop, which is frequently described as a “treasure”, on a moderately strenuous hike of 7.5 miles with 1500 feet of elevation gain. This park is just outside Woodside and offers an excellent opportunity to visit a lovely forest of redwoods and lovely gulch close to the heart of the Peninsula. We will start our hike at the Zwierlein Picnic Area parking lot. A short jaunt on the Dean Trail will take us to Crystal Springs Trail. This trail feels like a tunnel through vegetation , then quickly drops into redwood forest crossing two small wood bridges over a pretty creek. From here the Crystal Springs Trail rises 1400 feet on a perfect grade that allows a nice uniform rhythm up to Skyline. As we approach the ridge, we will shift to Summit Springs Trail for a short climb. Skyline Trail will allow us to briefly walk along the ridge. For the return segment of our loop, we will follow Chinquapin Trail which will take us in and out of heavily wooded canyons near the headwaters of McGarvey Gulch Creek. Eventually, we will arrive at the Dean Trail which will take us back to our starting point. DIRECTIONS from Caltrain California Avenue Station to Huddart County Park:
- Take I-280 NORTH to the WOODSIDE ROAD EXIT (Hwy. 84)
- Turn LEFT at the end of the off ramp
- Go about 1.6 miles
- Turn RIGHT onto Kings Mountain Road
- Go about 2.1 miles to the park entrance
- Park at Zwierlein Picnic Area parking lot
- MEET at the edge of the parking lot near the restrooms

Thank you Julio! Wasn't sure I could handle a 7.5 mile hike but you kept a comfortable pace, stopped several times to make sure the group stayed together. 48 people - wow! Beautiful trail, excellent weather - perfect!!!
