Forest of Nisene Marks State Park Hike

  • September 4, 2010 · 9:30 AM
  • California Avenue Caltrain Station

Hello All,

We had a wonderful group of 21 adventurous hikers for our Henry Cowell river-crossing hike on Sat. Aug. 21.... and even many pics to prove it!

Next Saturday (Sept. 4) our destination is Forest of Nisene Marks State Park (near Santa Cruz) where we will hike among the lovely redwoods and hike to the epicenter of the Loma Prieta earthquake. The hike is moderately strenuous with a total distance of 9 miles. Afterwards, we will have an optional dinner at Manuel's Mexican Restaurant in Aptos-- a local favorite with excellent margaritas and food!

Further details posted below. Note that for those in the South Bay Area who want to carpool, I have included a self-organizing carpool site in Los Gatos. I hope you can join us....

The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park offers an interesting landscape shaped by a variety of forces including earthquakes, large landslides, fire, and man. Some of the highlights of the park include a lovely deep narrow canyon surrounding the Aptos Creek, a range of tree types including Coastal Redwoods, madrone, various oaks and Douglas fir, lovely views of the Pacific Ocean, and the epicenter of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Due to the coastal climate of this park and the shade of the forests, this park is an ideal location for a comfortable summertime hike. Our hike will begin at the Porter Family Picnic Area and take us through the shady lush Aptos Creek canyon along the Loma Prieta Grade Trail. We will work our way up the canyon and pass a few historic sites including the Bridge Creek Historic Site. We will then follow a short trail segment to allow us to visit Maple Falls on Bridge Creek.

The Bridge Creek Trail then takes us back to the upper end of Aptos Creek Canyon. Here we will join the Aptos Creek Fire Road which takes us to the Aptos Creek Trail. A short hop on this trail takes us the epicenter of the Loma Prieta earthquake of Oct. 17, 1989. In 2006, a large landslide closed off the remainder of this trail, so we will turn back and head back towards the Aptos Creek Canyon and back to our starting point at Porter Family Picnic Area. It was my first hike with this Meetup group, and I thought Julio was very organized. The people on the hike were friendly, too. His choice of Zameen Mediterranean Cuisine afterward turned out to be excellent. I'll keep Zameen in mind for next time I'm there.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
