Hello All,

Mount Diablo State Park includes the iconic prominent East Bay peak that is its namesake as well as several additional surrounding peaks. On this hike we will hike up Mitchell Canyon to Eagle Peak, allowing us to enjoy the views from one of the prominent peaks surrounding Mount Diablo.

With a hike length of 8 miles and 2200 feet of elevation gain, our hike will be at our usual intermediate level. Please consider your physical condition and make sure you are able to handle an intermediate-level hike. *More details are listed below.*

SUMMARY OF KEY TIMES and LOCATIONS (details below):

8:45 AM at the California Avenue Caltrain Station, 101 S. California Ave., Palo Alto: PALO ALTO CARPOOL POINT.

9:45 AM: Loard’s Ice Cream, 699 Lewelling Blvd., Unit 140, San Leandro: EAST BAY CARPOOL POINT.

11:00 AM: Mitchell Canyon Interpretive Center, 96 Mitchell Canyon Road, Clayton, CA 94517. * STARTING POINT OF HIKE *

4:30 PM: Back at trailhead: ESTIMATED FINISH TIME

PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO CARPOOL IN FULL CARS to minimize the impact of our large group on the parking lot at our destination. Going to the designated carpool points in Palo Alto or East Bay is an easy and quick way to get into a carpool. No prearrangement of carpools needed. BEFORE SEEKING CARPOOLS FROM OTHER LOCATIONS, PLEASE SEE DETAILED COMMENTS ABOUT CARPOOLING BELOW.

BART OPTION: The Walnut Creek BART station is the nearest station to the trailhead and happens to be very close to the driving route to the starting point of our hike. IT WOULD BE GREAT IF SOME DRIVERS FROM THE EAST BAY OR SURROUNDINGS COULD OFFER RIDES FROM THE WALNUT CREEK BART station. - Suggested meeting time at Walnut Creek BART station: 10:20 AM

RAIN CANCELS.... If the weather forecast looks uncertain for the time of the hike, I will send out an e-mail and leave an outgoing message on my cell phone (# listed below) with the latest hike status information posted by 9 PM on the night before the hike.

* FURTHER DETAILS POSTED BELOW*

I hope you can join us....

Julio M.

CARPOOLING:

1. PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO CARPOOL IN FULL CARS to minimize the impact of our large group on the parking lot at our destination.

2. As usual, CARPOOLS DEPARTING FROM THE DESIGNATED CARPOOL POINTS ARE NOT GENERALLY PREARRANGED and are formed at the carpool location on the morning of the hike. So you can just show up and take it from there! This has worked fine every time. See the official carpool point meeting location(s) and time(s) below.

3. If you prefer to pre-arrange a carpool from areas not near the designated carpool point(s), PLEASE *KEEP POSTINGS TO THE WHOLE MEETUP GROUP TO A MINIMUM*. Such postings lead to too much e-mail traffic on the list, and we have had lots of complaints. INSTEAD, PLEASE POST ONCE TO INDICATE IF YOU NEED A RIDE, CAN OFFER A RIDE, OR BOTH AND FROM WHAT CITY (FOR EXAMPLE: “CAN RIDE OR DRIVE, MENLO PARK”). Then contact drivers or riders directly through the person’s profile or otherwise. Thanks!

Our hike will begin at the Mitchell Canyon Interpretive Cente and the nearby Mitchell Canyon trailhead. A steady climb up Mitchell Canyon Fire Road will

I got exactly 8 miles turning the GPS off when not moving. Great hike, as always. Unfortunately, I tore a ligament and fractured a bone in my right foot during the downhill rock scramble, but will be ready again in 2 weeks.

Hope you feel better soon Beverly. Take care and hope to see you soon on a hike.

Anyone up for a South Bay carpool? Palo Alto is quite a detour for this hike. Let's meet at the VTA park and ride at 516 Alder Dr Milpitas, CA 95035 (Tasman @ I880 ) at 9:45am. That gives us a little bit of slack but only a little. Please be on time.

Thanks Mani. I would also suggest a earlier meeting time 9:15am. Parking at Mt Diablo would be crazy if not full with 100+ people going. My last hike with this meetup had people spending 30+ mins parking 2 miles away.

I'm planning to bike from Walnut Creek BART if anyone would like to join. I've never done the route, but MapMyRide shows it as relatively flat and around an hour. I'll plan to leave the BART station at 10am. Please message me if you'd like to bike together. (It will be downhill on the way back when we're tired after the hike!)

I've moved to Berkeley and haven't managed to get to Mt. DIablo yet, so I'm looking forward to this hike! For anyone who wants to be picked up at North Berkeley BART, I can give a ride in a plug-in car to the first four who contact me DIRECTLY--(click on my name/send email), not by cluttering up the conversation!
