"Golden Gate to 2014" Hike

  • Jan 1, 2014 · 12:15 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Hello All,

Our next hike will ring in the New Year with a hike starting at Crissy Field Center in San Francisco at the quite reasonable hour of 12: 15 PM on January 1. We will then proceed to the mid-point of the Golden Gate Bridge and then return to our starting point via the heart of the Presidio.

This hike will be about 6.5 miles in length with about 400 feet of elevation gain so it will qualify as somewhat easier than our usual hikes. *Details are posted below.*

SUMMARY OF KEY TIMES and LOCATIONS (details below):

10:45 AM at the California Avenue Caltrain Station, 101 S. California Ave., Palo Alto: PALO ALTO CARPOOL POINT.

11:20 AM: Redwood Shores Public Library Parking Lot, Redwood City: NORTH PENINSULA CARPOOL POINT.

12:15 PM in front of Crissy Field Center, San Francisco * STARTING POINT OF HIKE *

5:00 PM: Back at Crissy Field Center: ESTIMATED FINISH TIME

PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO CARPOOL IN FULL CARS to minimize the impact of our large group on the parking lot at our destination. Going to the designated carpool points in Palo Alto or in Redwood Shores is an easy and quick way to get into a carpool. No prearrangement of carpools needed. BEFORE SEEKING CARPOOLS FROM OTHER LOCATIONS, PLEASE SEE DETAILED COMMENTS ABOUT CARPOOLING BELOW.

BART/ MUNI OPTION: Taking BART to the Powell Street Station and then taking Muni buses #30 or #45 to the end of the line in the Marina District is a way to take public transit to near the hike starting point.

AFTERNOON RAIN CANCELS.... If the weather forecast looks uncertain for the time of the hike, I will send out an e-mail and leave an outgoing message on my cell phone (# listed below) with the latest hike status information posted by 9 PM on the night before the hike.

Start the new year with exercise, lovely vistas, and good company. We will have an optional first dinner of 2014 in SF.

I hope you can join us....

Your Organizer,

Julio M.

“Golden Gate to 2014” Hike, Jan. 1, 2014 – Wed.

TOTAL LENGTH OF HIKE: 6.5 miles

Further information on Crissy Field at URL:  http://www.crissyfield.org

DRIVING DISTANCE/ TIME FROM PALO ALTO: 40 miles / 1h hour approx. each way

COST: Free parking, plus mileage (From Palo Alto: $32 per car to be split by everyone in the car; From Peninsula Carpool Point: $20 per car to be split by everyone in the car). NOTE: The hike organizer will ask for a voluntary donation (suggested amount 5 dollars) at the end of the hike to help keep the Meetup group going.

ORGANIZER: Julio M. (contact info at end of description)

AFTERNOON RAIN CANCELS.... If the weather forecast looks uncertain for the time of the hike, I will send out an e-mail and leave an outgoing message on my cell phone (# listed below) with the latest hike status information posted by 9 PM on the night before the hike.

RSVP REQUESTED

CARPOOLING:

1. PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO CARPOOL IN FULL CARS to minimize the impact of our large group on the parking lot at our destination.

2. As usual, CARPOOLS DEPARTING FROM THE DESIGNATED CARPOOL POINTS ARE NOT GENERALLY PREARRANGED and are formed at the carpool location on the morning of the hike. So you can just show up and take it from there! This has worked fine every time. See the official carpool point meeting location(s) and time(s) below.

3. If you prefer to pre-arrange a carpool from areas not near the designated carpool point(s), PLEASE *KEEP POSTINGS TO THE WHOLE MEETUP GROUP TO A MINIMUM*. Such postings lead to too much e-mail traffic on the list, and we have had lots of complaints. INSTEAD, PLEASE POST ONCE TO INDICATE IF YOU NEED A RIDE, CAN OFFER A RIDE, OR BOTH AND FROM WHAT CITY (FOR EXAMPLE: “CAN RIDE OR DRIVE, MENLO PARK”). Then contact drivers or riders directly through the person’s profile or otherwise. Thanks!

BART/ MUNI OPTION: Taking BART to the Powell Street Station and then taking Muni buses #30-Stockton or #45 Union/ Stockton to the end of the line in the Marina District is a way to take public transit to near the hike starting point. Further information can be found at BART.GOV and for Muni schedules go to: http://www.sfmta.com/getting-around/transit/routes-stops

MEETING TIMES and LOCATIONS:

NOTE: Organizer will be at this carpool point

11:20 AM: Redwood Shores Branch of Redwood City Public Library [399 Marine Pkwy, Redwood City, CA 94065]. This site will serve as our NORTH PENINSULA CARPOOL POINT. Carpools with excess capacity leaving Palo Alto will stop at this carpool point on the way to SF. The hike organizer will make sure the carpool he is in briefly stops at this location to help organize the carpools. MEET at corner of parking lot near intersection of Marine Parkway & Bridge Parkway.

12:15 PM in front of Crissy Field Center. Address: 1199 East Beach, San Francisco, CA 94129.  Google Map of location: http://g.co/maps/ds29f   * STARTING POINT OF HIKE *

ESTIMATED FINISH TIME: 5:00 PM (back at Crissy Field Center)

**OPTIONAL DINNER afterward in SF

BRING: sunscreen (note we will be quite exposed to the sun during this hike so a hat and/or extra sunscreen would likely be wise), coat, water, snacks, good walking shoes or hiking boots (we will be walking a bit on some dirt trails and/or grassy areas). NOTE: We will not be taking a lunch break during the hike so you may want to eat a lunch or brunch before the hike and bring a snack.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION:

Crissy Field and the Presidio are part of arguably the most unique and stunning urban park in the U.S. if not the world. Spectacular views of San Francisco Bay, the Marin Headlands, the city of San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge, or the Pacific Ocean are evident at almost every turn as one walks along the shore of San Francisco Bay. These parts of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area also offer many natural and historic features.

We will begin our hike at the Crissy Field Center from which we will walk westward along the shore of SF Bay to the Golden Gate Bridge. This walk offers lovely views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Bay, and Marin Headlands. We will then walk to the middle of the Golden Gate Bridge and admire the lovely views in all directions including fine views of the Bay and downtown San Francisco.

We will then return to the southern end of the Golden Gate Bridge and walk down into the Presidio to explore its center. Our walk through the Presidio will take us by several historic structures including many that have been converted for contemporary use by many nonprofit and other organizations. We will then make the traverse to the northeast to return to our starting point at the Crissy Field Center.

There will be an optional dinner in SF after the hike.

To avoid exposing your email address to a lot of other people this way, you can go to your recipient's profile page and send a private email from there. To have the other person send you an attachment, be sure that the box for hiding your own address from them is un-checked.

I'm going to take BART (Millbrae) to Embarcadero and hop onto my bike and bike to the meeting place. If you want to join me on a little bike adventure before the hike, let me know so we can coordinate. My first time doing this leisure ride. Leave Millbrae @ 10am, arrive Embarcadero station @ 11am. *cancel if rain*

Great idea but for those of us that don't have a bike--Do anyone know how do we get to the meeting place from Embarcadero??\

      December 25, 2013

    • Jim S.

If you're in good shape and can gauge your speed, you might walk there along the Embarcadero and on to Crissy via Fort Mason, since that's fairly flat and Julio's hike is one of his easier outings. To take public transit, you can use the 511.org trip planner (http://tripplanner.tr...). Be sure to specify "Arrive by", not "Leave by".
