Crystal Springs/ Edgewood Park Hike

Hello All,

Crystal Springs reservoir and the neighboring Edgewood County Park provide an excellent opportunity to witness the signature of the powerful forces associated with the San Andreas fault. This area also reveals key links in the system that transports water from the Tuolumne River in the Sierra Nevada mountains to the San Francisco Peninsula as well as offering lovely views of the mid-Peninsula.

With a hike length of 8.5 miles and a total elevation gain of 1400 feet, our hike will be well within our usual intermediate level. Please consider your physical condition and make sure you are able to handle an intermediate-level hike. *More details are listed below.*

SUMMARY OF KEY TIMES and LOCATIONS (details below):

9:30 AM at the California Avenue Caltrain Station, 101 S. California Ave., Palo Alto: PALO ALTO CARPOOL POINT.

10:00 AM: Edgewood Road Park and Ride Parking Lot, Redwood City: *STAGING AREA FOR START OF HIKE* A “car bridge” will be used to take people to the hike starting point since our hike route is one-way and starts at another location and ends at this parking lot.

4:00 PM: Back at staging area: ESTIMATED FINISH TIME

PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO CARPOOL IN FULL CARS to minimize the impact of our large group on the parking lot at our destination. Going to the designated carpool point in Palo Alto is an easy and quick way to get into a carpool. No prearrangement of carpools needed. BEFORE SEEKING CARPOOLS FROM OTHER LOCATIONS, PLEASE SEE DETAILED COMMENTS ABOUT CARPOOLING BELOW.

RAIN CANCELS.... If the weather forecast looks uncertain for the time of the hike, I will send out an e-mail and leave an outgoing message on my cell phone (# listed below) with the latest hike status information posted by 9 PM on the night before the hike.

* FURTHER DETAILS POSTED BELOW*

I hope you can join us....

Your Organizer,

Julio M.

CARPOOLING:

1. PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO CARPOOL IN FULL CARS to minimize the impact of our large group on the parking lot at our destination and to reduce our carbon footprint. PARKING AT THIS PARK IS LOWER THAN USUAL SO CARPOOLING IS ESSENTIAL.

2. As usual, CARPOOLS DEPARTING FROM THE DESIGNATED CARPOOL POINTS ARE NOT GENERALLY PREARRANGED and are formed at the carpool location on the morning of the hike. So you can just show up and take it from there! This has worked fine every time. See the official carpool point meeting location(s) and time(s) below.

3. If you prefer to pre-arrange a carpool from areas not near the designated carpool point(s), PLEASE *KEEP POSTINGS TO THE WHOLE MEETUP GROUP TO A MINIMUM*. Such postings lead to too much e-mail traffic on the list, and we have had lots of complaints. INSTEAD, PLEASE POST ONCE TO INDICATE IF YOU NEED A RIDE, CAN OFFER A RIDE, OR BOTH AND FROM WHAT CITY (FOR EXAMPLE: “CAN RIDE OR DRIVE, MENLO PARK”). Then contact drivers or riders directly through the person’s profile or otherwise. Thanks!

A “car bridge” will be used to take people to the hike starting point since our hike route is one-way and starts at another location and ends at this parking lot.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION:

Crystal Springs reservoir and the neighboring Edgewood County Park provide an excellent opportunity to witness the signature of the powerful forces associated with the San Andreas fault. This area also reveals key links in the system that transports water from the Tuolumne River in the Sierra Nevada mountains to the San Francisco Peninsula as well as offering lovely views of the mid-Peninsula.

Our hike will be a “one-way hike” that will require a “car bridge” to take people back to the starting point from the endpoint of the hike. The hike includes segments on the Crystal Spring Trail which will allow us to experience excellent views of the Upper Crystal Springs reservoir and the surrounding pristine watershed. In addition, we will have the opportunity to view the Pulgas Water Temple where the water from the Sierra Nevada mountains makes its first appearance on the Peninsula.

We will follow the Edgewood Trail to Edgewood County Park and its fine woodlands, grasslands, and unusual serpentinite rock formations. Within the park our route will include the Franciscan Trail, the Ridgeview Loop Trail, the Serpentine Loop Trail, the Sylvan Loop Trail, and a return to the Edgewood Trail. Our hike will allow us to sample many of the highlights of Edgewood County Park.

The hike will end at the Edgewood Road Park and Ride Parking Lot. The cars that we have parked at this parking lot will then be used to take drivers back to the hike’s starting point. Drivers will then return with their cars to pick-up the remaining hikers.

DIRECTIONS from Palo Alto to Edgewood Road Park and Ride lot:.

Google Map showing route: http://g.co/maps/fqseg

- Take ramp onto I-280 N (go 9.2 mi)

- Take exit 29 for Edgewood Rd

- Turn right onto Edgewood Rd (go 256 feet)

- Turn left into the Park and Ride lot

* NOTE: Directions to the starting point of the hike will be provided when we meet at this parking lot. A car bridge will be used to ferry people to the starting point of the hike and the hike will end at the Edgewood Road Park and Ride Lot.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
