Uvas Canyon County Park: Waterfalls Hike

  • April 19, 2014 · 11:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Hello All,

We will thoroughly explore this park which is known for its scenic waterfalls. With rains in recent weeks, we could be treated to some nice stream and waterfall flows in this lovely park . A portion of our route will include the Waterfall Loop which often makes “top ten” lists of best hikes in the San Francisco Bay Area. This hike has become an annual tradition and offers a multitude of quite lovely and varied waterfalls.

With a hike length of 5.5 miles and 1500 feet of elevation gain, our hike will be a bit easier than our usual intermediate level. Please consider your physical condition and make sure you are able to handle a hike at this level. *More details are listed below.*

SUMMARY OF KEY TIMES and LOCATIONS (details below):

9:15 AM at the California Avenue Caltrain Station, 101 S. California Ave., Palo Alto: PALO ALTO CARPOOL POINT (SELF-ORGANIZING this time)

10:00 AM at the Cottle Road Park and Ride at intersection of Cottle Road and Highway 85. SOUTH BAY CARPOOL POINT (ORGANIZER WILL BE AT THIS CARPOOL POINT).

11:00 am at first parking lot on right after entrance gate in Uvas Canyon County Park. *STARTING POINT OF HIKE*

3:30 PM: Back at trailhead: ESTIMATED FINISH TIME

PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO CARPOOL IN FULL CARS to minimize the impact of our large group on the parking lot at our destination. Going to the designated carpool points in Palo Alto or San Jose is an easy and quick way to get into a carpool. No prearrangement of carpools needed. BEFORE SEEKING CARPOOLS FROM OTHER LOCATIONS, PLEASE SEE DETAILED COMMENTS ABOUT CARPOOLING BELOW.

RAIN CANCELS.... If the weather forecast looks uncertain for the time of the hike, I will send out an e-mail and leave an outgoing message on my cell phone (# listed below) with the latest hike status information posted by 9 PM on the night before the hike.

* FURTHER DETAILS POSTED BELOW*

I hope you can join us....

Your Organizer,

Julio M.

CARPOOLING:

1. PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO CARPOOL IN FULL CARS to minimize the impact of our large group on the parking lot at our destination. Parking space is somewhat limited at this park, so this is important.

2. As usual, CARPOOLS DEPARTING FROM THE DESIGNATED CARPOOL POINTS ARE NOT GENERALLY PREARRANGED and are formed at the carpool location on the morning of the hike. So you can just show up and take it from there! This has worked fine every time. See the official carpool point meeting location(s) and time(s) below.

3. If you prefer to pre-arrange a carpool from areas not near the designated carpool point(s), PLEASE *KEEP POSTINGS TO THE WHOLE MEETUP GROUP TO A MINIMUM*. Such postings lead to too much e-mail traffic on the list, and we have had lots of complaints. INSTEAD, PLEASE POST ONCE TO INDICATE IF YOU NEED A RIDE, CAN OFFER A RIDE, OR BOTH AND FROM WHAT CITY (FOR EXAMPLE: “CAN RIDE OR DRIVE, MENLO PARK”). Then contact drivers or riders directly through the person’s profile or otherwise. Thanks!

MEETING TIMES and LOCATIONS:

9:15 AM at the California Avenue Caltrain Station, 101 S. California Ave.,  Palo Alto (meet at Calif. Ave. entrance to parking lot): PALO ALTO CARPOOL POINT.

                Google Map of location: http://g.co/maps/wq6yv

NOTE: Organizer will *not* be at this carpool point on this date, so this carpool point will be SELF-ORGANIZING. Please observe our practice of waiting 15 min. from the appointed meeting time to allow for late arrivals and people arriving on Caltrain (both northbound & southbound trains stop here between 9:15 AM and 9:30 AM)

10:00 AM: Cottle Road Park and Ride at intersection of Cottle Road and Highway 85. This site will serve as our SOUTH BAY CARPOOL POINT. Carpools with excess capacity leaving Palo Alto will stop at this carpool point on the way to Uvas Canyon County Park. The hike ORGANIZER WILL BE AT THIS CARPOOL POINT.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION:

We will thoroughly explore this park which is known for its scenic waterfalls. With recent rains, we could be treated to some nice stream and waterfall flows in this lovely park . A portion of our route will include the Waterfall Loop which often makes “top ten” lists of best hikes in the San Francisco Bay Area.

From the Ranger Station we will proceed along Uvas Creek Trail to see this major creek up close and enjoy the rush of water along its banks. Our hike will then join the Waterfall Loop Trail which will take us along lovely Swanson Creek and provide good views of Basin Falls, Upper Falls, and Black Rock Falls-- each with its own unique geometry of flowing water and cliffs, which should be quite a treat after the recent rains.

Along the way we will take Knobcone Trail to Knobcone Point which will give us a good aerobic workout. Next we continue along Swanson Creek to Contour Trail. Our hike will then join Alex Canyon trail which will return us to our starting point.

Can anyone recommend a restaurant down in Morgan Hill, (or going north) if some of us want a bite to eat afterward?

Here's a Thai one in Sunnyvale that I haven't tried yet for on the way coming back north:
    http://www.rama-v-thaicuisine.com/dinner.pdf (?) "RAMA V" (1028 E El Camino Real)
"Turmeric" is a good one that I know of in Sunnyvale, at least I know their buffet at lunch has been very good in the past.
