  • This location is shown only to members

Hello All,

Henry Cowell State Park is the home of venerable old growth redwoods, lush stream canyons including that of the majestic San Lorenzo River, and plentiful wildlife. On this hike, we will take a grand loop around the park and descend into the San Lorenzo Canyon, where we will allow some time for enjoyment of the water for those who are so inclined.

The shade of the majestic redwoods will be refreshing on a warm August day. ** NOTE: BE PREPARED FOR SEVERAL CROSSINGS OF THE SHALLOW RIVER on foot and for a little bit of fun adventure.** The water will likely be about knee high (or less given the drought).

With a hike length of 8 miles and 1100 feet of elevation gain, our hike will be at our usual intermediate level. Please consider your physical condition and make sure you are able to handle an intermediate-level hike. *More details are listed below.*

SUMMARY OF KEY TIMES and LOCATIONS (details below):

BEFORE SEEKING CARPOOLS FROM OTHER LOCATIONS, PLEASE SEE DETAILED COMMENTS ABOUT CARPOOLING BELOW.

CALTRAIN AS AN OPTION FROM SAN FRANCISCO OR FROM THE SOUTH: One option is to take Caltrain #422 at 8:15 AM from SF which arrives at the California Avenue Caltrain Station carpool point (“Palo Alto Carpool Point”) at 9:21 AM. From the south, Caltrain #425 will drop you off at the California Avenue Caltrain station at 9:27 AM. Both of these times are within our 15-minute waiting window (until 9:30 AM) at this carpool point.

RAIN CANCELS.... If the weather forecast looks uncertain for the time of the hike, I will send out an e-mail and leave an outgoing message on my cell phone (# listed below) with the latest hike status information posted by 9 PM on the night before the hike.

CARPOOLING:

1. PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO CARPOOL IN FULL CARS to minimize the impact of our large group on the parking lot at our destination and to reduce our carbon footprint.

2. As usual, CARPOOLS DEPARTING FROM THE DESIGNATED CARPOOL POINTS ARE NOT GENERALLY PREARRANGED and are formed at the carpool location on the morning of the hike. So you can just show up and take it from there! This has worked fine every time. See the official carpool point meeting location(s) and time(s) below.

3. If you prefer to pre-arrange a carpool from areas not near the designated carpool point(s), PLEASE *KEEP POSTINGS TO THE WHOLE MEETUP GROUP TO A MINIMUM*. Such postings lead to too much e-mail traffic on the list, and we have had lots of complaints. INSTEAD, PLEASE POST ONCE TO INDICATE IF YOU NEED A RIDE, CAN OFFER A RIDE, OR BOTH AND FROM WHAT CITY (FOR EXAMPLE: “CAN RIDE OR DRIVE, MENLO PARK”). Then contact drivers or riders directly through the person’s profile or otherwise. Thanks!

ROUTE DESCRIPTION:

Henry Cowell State Park is the home of venerable old growth redwoods, lush stream canyons including that of the majestic San Lorenzo River, and plentiful wildlife. On this hike, we will take a grand loop around the park and descend into the San Lorenzo Canyon, where we will allow some time for enjoyment of the water for those who are so inclined. We will begin on the Redwood Loop Trail which will take us through majestic 1000 year old redwoods. Our route will then take us along the River Trail and Rincon Fire Road through lovely forest to the Diversion Dam trail. Along the way we will pass the lovely Cathedral Redwoods. Our first stop will be at Frisbee Beach after which we will make our first shallow river crossing. We will then hike along the other side of the San Lorenzo River for a short segment enjoying the majestic forest and isolation.

Next, we will cross the San Lorenzo River to the Big Black Rock Hole Trail/ Buckeye Trail which will take us through the San Lorenzo River Canyon and two more lovely river crossings. There are no bridges at these crossings, but during this season the water level is low. We will then turn left onto the Pine Trail and follow it to the Observation Deck, where a nice view of the area can be seen. Finally, we will take the Ridge Fire Road down to Pipeline Road and follow it and the River Trail back to our starting point.

This was my first hike with the group and it was absolute fun :) I liked Julio's assuring knowledge of the route and brilliant pacing. We were at the right places at the right time! eg. swim-hole for lunch and another swim-hole just in time to see the tarzan lady pull off a stunning jump.. Thanks Julio and the team.

For those of you that saw the lizard w/ the blue tail:
    (and are interested)
The American five-lined skink is a type of lizard common to North America. Juvenile members of the species are identified by their bright blue tails and are often called blue-tail skinks.

Juveniles are known for their blue tails. It is relatively small with a black body with yellow stripes going to a bright blue tail.

When they become frightened they have the ability to pop their tail off and it will continue to wiggle and distract their predator while they run away. When young they have a dark black body with bright yellow stripes leading from the back of the neck down to the meeting of the bright blue tail. As the juvenile males age, they lose their yellowish stripes and their back starts to become a brownish black colorFemales usually keep their blue tail for their whole life, though.
Commonly observed on low vegetation and low on tree trunks. [1]
