Crystal Springs/ Edgewood Park Hike

Hello All,

Crystal Springs reservoir and the neighboring Edgewood County Park provide an excellent opportunity to witness the signature of the powerful forces associated with the San Andreas fault. This area also reveals key links in the system that transports water from the Tuolumne River in the Sierra Nevada mountains to the San Francisco Peninsula as well as offering lovely views of the mid-Peninsula.

Our next hike will explore this area with a hike of 8.5 miles length and 1100 feet of elevation gain, making this an intermediate hike of slightly less difficulty than our usual hikes.  *More details are listed below.*

Note that our hike is a “one-way hike” that will use a “car bridge” to carry people back to the starting point from the endpoint of the hike at Edgewood Road Park and Ride Parking Lot. See further details below.

SPECIAL NOTE ON CARPOOLING:
Since our group is large and parking is somewhat limited at the starting point and meeting point of our hike, I urge everyone to attempt to carpool in a full car to the meeting point at Edgewood Road Park and Ride.

* If you are driving from the South Bay or southeast Bay Area and do not have a full car, please stop at the carpool point in Palo Alto (101 S. California Ave. as described in hike description) to fill up your car.

* If you are driving from points well to the north of Palo Alto, consider self-organizing into carpools of full cars by meeting at a carpool point with more parking (for example the Ralston Avenue Park and Ride in Belmont which is on Google Maps at http://g.co/maps/8jwa...).

Thank you in advance for your cooperation on this matter. By reducing the total number of cars, we can make our car-bridge smoother and reduce our impact on others at these parking lots.

Your Organizer,

Julio M.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION:
Crystal Springs reservoir and the neighboring Edgewood County Park provide an excellent opportunity to witness the signature of the powerful forces associated with the San Andreas fault. This area also reveals key links in the system that transports water from the Tuolumne River in the Sierra Nevada mountains to the San Francisco Peninsula as well as offering lovely views of the mid-Peninsula.

Our hike will be a “one-way hike” that will require a “car bridge” to take people back to the starting point from the endpoint of the hike. The hike includes segments on the Crystal Spring Trail which will allow us to experience excellent views of the Upper Crystal Springs reservoir and the surrounding pristine watershed. In addition, we will have the opportunity to view the Pulgas Water Temple where the water from the Sierra Nevada mountains makes its first appearance on the Peninsula.

We will follow the Edgewood Trail to Edgewood County Park and its fine woodlands, grasslands, and unusual serpentinite rock formations. Within the park our route will include the Franciscan Trail, the Ridgeview Loop Trail, the Serpentine Loop Trail, the Sylvan Loop Trail, and a return to the Edgewood Trail. Our hike will allow us to sample many of the highlights of Edgewood County Park.

The hike will end at the Edgewood Road Park and Ride Parking Lot. The cars that we have parked at this parking lot will then be used to take drivers back to the hike’s starting point. Drivers will then return with their cars to pick-up the remaining hikers.

DIRECTIONS from Palo Alto to Edgewood Road Park and Ride lot:
Google Map showing route: http://g.co/maps/fqseg

- Take exit 29 for Edgewood Rd
- Turn right onto Edgewood Rd (go 256 feet)
- Turn left into the Park and Ride lot
* NOTE: Directions to the starting point of the hike will be provided when we meet at this parking lot.

Good hike. The weather was fantastic. Since this was a one way hike, the logistics of ferrying the group from one place to another might have seemed confusing, given the size of the group, but everyone was nice (they did not just disperse after the hike) and the group leader (Julio) handled it well. Great group. Looking forward to the next hike.

Final GPS tally: 8.91 miles. My GPS tends to err on the low side so it was probably 9 miles.

I'm in for the carpool from the Microcenter near AMC Mercado. Can ride or drive. Edgewood Park and Ride is a little more than 30 minutes away so 9:45am should sync up nicely with the 10:00am start from California Avenue.

I think who ever wants to car pool from the Southbay can meet at AMC Mercado at around 9:30am and then sort out who rides with who? I have not heard back from those who emailed me about car pooling so I'm not sure if they are still going. As for location within the shopping plaza, I think the other end of the plaza where the computer store (forgot the name) is alot less busy and better for parking our cars during the day.
