Muir Woods National Monument to Stinson Beach Hike

Hello All,

Muir Woods National Monument offers a “cathedral of redwoods” with trees ranging in age from 400 to 800 years and heights up to 250 feet. Named for John Muir, the naturalist who was a titan in helping preserve America’s natural beauty and founded the Sierra Club, people come from around the world to pay homage to nature here.  Stinson Beach provides a fine beach at which to cool off after a hike. Along the way we will also explore lovely sections of Mount Tamalpais State Park.

With a hike length of about 11 miles and 2700 feet of elevation gain, our hike will be a bit more difficult than our usual intermediate level. Please consider your physical condition and make sure you are able to handle an intermediate-level hike. *More details are listed below.*

** There will be an optional dinner in the Marin County area after the hike.

IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT CARPOOLING
1. Since parking is limited at Muir Woods, please make every effort to join a carpool by going to one of our designated carpool points in Palo Alto, Redwood City, and San Francisco. See details in the full hike description below.* As usual, carpools departing from the carpool points are not generally prearranged and are formed at the carpool location on the morning of the hike. So you can just show up and take it from there!

2. If you live in the East Bay or Marin, please try to self-organize into carpools. Since we have had several complaints about the number of comments relating to carpools, please try to minimize use of “comments” to the whole group to organize carpools  Instead, please include a note in your RSVP indicating if you need a ride, can offer a ride, or both and from what city in the East Bay or Marin (Example: "Can drive, San Rafael"). Then contact drivers or riders directly through the person’s profile or otherwise. Thanks! Let’s see how this approach to self-organizing carpools works this time.

3. As you approach Muir Woods on Highway 101, you may see roadside informational signs stating that the parking lot at Muir Woods is full and directing you to the Muir Woods Shuttle Bus which departs  from a parking lot near Highway 101 (Pohono Street Park & Ride accessed via Exit 445B). Further information on the Muir Woods Shuttle Bus (Route 66). Taking this shuttle is a good way to get to Muir Woods if parking is not available at the park itself. The shuttles run every 20 minutes between the Pohono Street Park and Ride and Muir Woods. If you end up on the shuttle, call the organizer (contact information at the base of the hike description) so that we will know to wait for you.

See the details below.

I hope  you can join us....

Your Organizer,
Julio M.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION:
Muir Woods National Monument offers a “cathedral of redwoods” with trees ranging in age from 400 to 800 years and heights up to 250 feet. Named for John Muir, the naturalist who was a titan in helping preserve America’s natural beauty and founded the Sierra Club, people come from around the world to pay homage to nature here.  Stinson Beach provides a fine beach at which to cool off after a hike. Along the way we will also explore lovely sections of Mount Tamalpais State Park.

Our hike will begin next to the Muir Woods Visitor Center as we follow the main trail through the “cathedral of redwood trees”. We will next join the Ben Johnson trail to take us through a lovely forest and into Mount Tamalpais State Park. We will then go along the Dipsea Trail, Coastal View Trail, and Old Mine Trail to work our way part-way up the south side of Mount Tamalpais and to Pantoll Ranger Station.

At Pantoll we will join the lovely Steep Ravine Trail which passes through remarkably beautiful terrain, including beautiful redwods, lush undergrowth, and a pretty stream. A short segment of the Dipsea Trail then takes us to the charming town and beach of Stinson Beach where we will spend some time on the beach resting and appreciating the surf. Next, the famous Dipsea Trail will take us most of the way back to our starting point. The Ben Johnson Trail and Hillside Trail, and Main Trail will return us to the shade and solace of the redwoods of Muir Woods.

There will be an optional dinner in the Marin County area after the hike.

As usual Julio did an excellent job leading this hike. Again he assembled a nice and pleasant group of people/followers. This time the hike was a little longer than usual with the option of taking the shuttle back half way.

Everyone using the twitter @ symbol. Posting here is like using "Reply All" in your email to 140 people. These can be private messages, you don't need to post them all here. Click on the person's name and click on "Send Mail". It is less work than typing @sue, @Vinita, @vijayan, @neelay, @ C Patel. Do we all really need to know it is "cool"? If you are asking an individual for a seat, send a private message.
