Hello All,

Coal Mine Ridge Preserve in the Town of Portola Valley is just a few miles from the roar of Silicon Valley in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains and provides an oasis of serenity and wonderful opportunities for hikes amongst oaks, toyon, and bay trees. Wooded ridgeland with intimate views of Windy Hill and Portola Valley are a distinguishing feature of this preserve.

Our hike will be an intermediate level hike at the easier end of our usual range with a length of 6 miles and 1000 feet of elevation gain. Please consider your physical condition and make sure you are able to handle an intermediate-level hike. More details are listed below.

SUMMARY OF MEETING TIMES AND POINTS: (details below):
10:30 AM at the California Avenue Caltrain Station, PALO ALTO
11:00 AM: at park at intersection of Alpine Road & Portola Road, PORTOLA VALLEY
NOTE: The meeting time at the California Avenue Caltrain Station in Palo Alto allows people to conveniently arrive on Caltrain from either the north or the south.

NOTES ABOUT CARPOOLING:
1. PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO CARPOOL to minimize the impact of our large group on the parking lot at our destination.

2. As usual, CARPOOLS DEPARTING FROM THE DESIGNATED CARPOOL POINTS ARE NOT GENERALLY PREARRANGED and are formed at the carpool location on the morning of the hike. So you can just show up and take it from there! This has worked fine every time. See the official carpool point meeting location(s) and time(s) below.

3. If you prefer to pre-arrange a carpool from areas not near the designated carpool point(s), PLEASE *DO NOT POST COMMENTS* TO THE WHOLE MEETUP GROUP TO PRE-ARRANGE CARPOOLS. Such postings lead to too much e-mail traffic on the list, and we have had lots of complaints.  INSTEAD, PLEASE INCLUDE A NOTE IN YOUR RSVP INDICATING IF YOU NEED A RIDE, CAN OFFER A RIDE, OR BOTH AND FROM WHAT CITY (FOR EXAMPLE: “CAN RIDE OR DRIVE, MENLO PARK”). Then contact drivers or riders directly through the person’s profile or otherwise. Thanks!

Details are posted below.

I hope  you can join us....

Your Organizer,
Julio M.

I'm new to this group...How is this going to work with over 100 people? Seems like it will make things very crowded and create a bottleneck for others who want to use the trail.

I agree with Linda...it's a very narrow trail and more than 10 would be a challange, especially with other folks who are trying to hike. You may want to consider going through the Alpine entrance to the Windy Hill area...much more space there. Or, moving it to Windy Hill parking lot (about 1 mile away) with much more parking. There is no more than about 10-15 places for cars at Coal Mine...that' including other hikers on a Sat.

Julio: I've emailed you also. Danna Breen has kindly offered some parking spaces (up to 20) at her home at 4680 Alpine. I would add that should only be when the other spots at PV Hardware are taken since it's some burden for her and her family. Perhaps some smaller numbers should be considered or taking several hikes on alternate days to lesson impact to PV in the future. In the meantime, enjoy Coal Mine Ridge!
