San Francisco: South by Southeast Hike

Hello All,

We will explore the City's rapidly changing and interesting southeastern section and then work our way to San Francisco's highest point by going through several of the City's charming southern neighborhoods and parks.

With a hike length of 10 miles and 1700 feet of elevation gain, our hike will be at our usual intermediate level. Please consider your physical condition and make sure you are able to handle an intermediate-level hike. *More details are listed below.*

There will be an optional dinner in SF after the hike.

NOTES ABOUT TRANSPORTATION:
1. We will be taking Caltrain to the hike starting point.

2. If you are in the East Bay, BART is an excellent option. See details below.

3. If you prefer to pre-arrange a carpool from areas not served by Caltrain, PLEASE *DO NOT POST COMMENTS* TO THE WHOLE MEETUP GROUP TO PRE-ARRANGE CARPOOLS. Such postings lead to too much e-mail traffic on the list, and we have had lots of complaints. INSTEAD, PLEASE INCLUDE A NOTE IN YOUR RSVP INDICATING IF YOU NEED A RIDE, CAN OFFER A RIDE, OR BOTH AND FROM WHAT CITY (FOR EXAMPLE: “CAN RIDE OR DRIVE, MENLO PARK”). Then contact drivers or riders directly through the person’s profile or otherwise. Thanks!

San Francisco: South by Southeast Hike, Oct. 20, 2012 - Sat

--------------------------------------------------------------------

DESTINATION: San Francisco: South by Southeast

DATE: October 20, 2012 (Saturday)

TOTAL LENGTH OF HIKE: 10 miles

TOTAL ELEVATION GAIN: 1700 feet

TRANSPORTATION:
1. WE WILL BE TAKING CALTRAIN FROM CALIFORNIA AVENUE STATION, PALO ALTO. I encourage people on the Peninsula and in the South Bay to take Caltrain since the hike starting point is close to the Caltrain station in San Francisco (and of course you don't have to worry about finding parking or driving in SF).

NOTE: If you would like to board the train at one of the stops other than the California Ave. station in Palo Alto and join the group on the train, we will try to be in the third car back from the north end of the train. If the cars are the grey and red cars, we will be upstairs. Otherwise, if the cars are silver, we will be downstairs. If you can’t find us, call Julio M to meet up with us on the train.

2. FROM THE EAST BAY TAKING BART IS AN EXCELLENT OPTION. Get off at the Embarcadero Station and switch to the Muni Metro N or T lines (“Inbound Direction”). If you are on Muni N line, get off at the end of the line at the Caltrain station and walk west on 4th St. to Mission Creek Park. If you are on Muni T line, get off at Caltrain station or 4th and Channel Street.

3. CARPOOLING: If you prefer to pre-arrange a carpool from areas not served by Caltrain, PLEASE *DO NOT POST COMMENTS* TO THE WHOLE MEETUP GROUP TO PRE-ARRANGE CARPOOLS. Thanks!

COST: Caltrain roundtrip ticket ($14 for Palo Alto to SF) + Muni Metro ($2.00) to return to Caltrain station.

NOTE: The hike organizer will ask for a voluntary donation of 3-4 dollars at the end of the hike to help cover expenses associated with the Meetup group.

ORGANIZER: Julio M.(contact info at end of description)

RAIN CANCELS.... In case of doubt, call my cell phone # (listed below) after 9 PM on the night before the hike. I will leave an outgoing message with any notices about hike cancellation due to weather.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION:

We will explore the City's rapidly changing and interesting southeastern section and then work our way to San Francisco's highest point by going through several of the City's charming southern neighborhoods and parks.

We will begin our hike at Mission Creek Park in the rapidly developing Mission Bay area. The first part of the hike will take us along the waterfront in the Mission Bay area and will allow us to glimpse the new UCSF Mission Bay Campus. We will then hike to the top of Potrero Hill, appreciate this unique neighborhood, and enjoy the views from the top.

Our hike will then take us to the lovely views from Bernal Heights Park and through the interesting Bernal Heights neighborhood. Next, we will descend into the Glen Park neighborhood and explore the wonderful taste of nature in an urban setting offered by Glen Canyon Park. We will then hike up Mount Davidson to the highest point in San Francisco and enjoy the panoramic views of SF and the Bay Area.

Next, we will hike down from the mountain to the charming Forest Hill neighborhood. Our hiking will come to an end at the Forest Hill Muni Station where we will descend into an engineering wonder and catch the Muni Metro back to the San Francisco Caltrain Station.

There will be an optional dinner in SF after the hike.

The hike was a nice change of scenery, good for people wanting to feel San Francisco as a non-tourist. I noticed a few people thought they were only going to walk on sidewalks, not with Julio :-) The highlight of the hike is Mt. Davidson when we reached to the top, not hard really, and walked through a dense woodsy and wet area, pretending I was in a tropical jungle!

I'm looking forward to this hike and meeting you. A quick question. Do you think it's a good idea to wear hiking shoes instead of running shoes on this South by Southeast Hike (Oct. 20, 2012)?

This is a great hike for me. I came from LA, and I need to explore the S.F. Bay region.
Hey, I am glad that some of you are coming from the famous Santa Clara county. I hope to meet you guys.

Just curious, if we don't plan to take Cal Train, can we just park and meet at the Cal Train Station in SF?

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
