Butano State Park Hike

Hello All,

Butano State Park preserves a lovely lush central canyon inhabited by a wide diversity of trees and plants and offers inspiring panoramic views from its upper reaches. Our hike will allow us to sample this diversity of wildlife and lovely views.

With a hike length of 10 miles and 1800 feet of elevation gain, our hike will be at the upper end of our usual intermediate level. Please consider your physical condition and make sure you are able to handle an intermediate-level hike. *More details are listed below.*

There will be an optional dinner at Duarte's Tavern, which is a local landmark especially known for its delicious artichoke creations and its fine olallieberry pie, in Pescadero after the hike.

NOTES ABOUT CARPOOLING:
1. PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO CARPOOL to minimize the impact of our large group on the parking lot at our destination. PARKING AT THIS PARK IS LOWER THAN USUAL SO CARPOOLING IS ESSENTIAL.

2. As usual, CARPOOLS DEPARTING FROM THE DESIGNATED CARPOOL POINTS ARE NOT GENERALLY PREARRANGED and are formed at the carpool location on the morning of the hike. So you can just show up and take it from there! This has worked fine every time. See the official carpool point meeting location(s) and time(s) below.

3. If you prefer to pre-arrange a carpool from areas not near the designated carpool point(s), PLEASE *DO NOT POST COMMENTS* TO THE WHOLE MEETUP GROUP TO PRE-ARRANGE CARPOOLS. Such postings lead to too much e-mail traffic on the list, and we have had lots of complaints. INSTEAD, PLEASE INCLUDE A NOTE IN YOUR RSVP INDICATING IF YOU NEED A RIDE, CAN OFFER A RIDE, OR BOTH AND FROM WHAT CITY (FOR EXAMPLE: “CAN RIDE OR DRIVE, MENLO PARK”). Then contact drivers or riders directly through the person’s profile or otherwise. Thanks!

4. CALLING FOR VOLUNTEERS WILLING TO MANAGE CARPOOL POINTS IN THE EAST BAY OR MARIN OR SAN JOSE: If you are willing to take responsbility for setting-up and managing a carpool point covering a *region* not covered by the official carpool points (for example Marin, East Bay, San Jose), please send me an e-mail me with a proposed meeting location (including address and Google Map link) and time. If we decide the carpool point would provide a good addition to the official carpool points, I will send out a notice to the group announcing the carpool point. Please only volunteer if you are truly committed to following through on the management of a designated carpool point (not just a single carpool for your car) and are sure you will be able to follow through (and of course that you will attend the hike).

ROUTE DESCRIPTION:
Butano State Park preserves a lovely lush central canyon inhabited by a wide diversity of trees and plants and offers inspiring panoramic views from its upper reaches. Our hike will allow us to sample this diversity of wildlife and lovely views.

We will set-off on our hike along the Mill Ox Trail. Next we will join the Jackson Flats Trail which will start us on our journey through the heart of the canyon and will allow us to encounter the Little Butano Creek and serene redwood forests. At Canyon Trail we will wind our way further up the heart of the canyon while also beginning our climb up to the canyon rim.

Our route will then take us through Trail Camp and along the Butano Fire Trail. As we start to work our way along the rim of the canyon, we will explore an abandoned air strip that offers lovely views to the west. We will continue on Butano Fire Trail as we follow the canyon's rim. Our final descent into the canyon and return to our starting point will be along the Mill Ox Trail.

Hi Inessa, are you sble to get to Palo Alto Train station? I can pick you up there

    November 2, 2012

  • sherry

Is this a fast pace hike? My pace is in between a beginner and intermediate. Let me know if this would be a problem. Thanks.

    October 30, 2012

    • Tommy K.

It's not fast pace, I think. Like Julio says above, the hike is moderate, elevation is usually around 1500 feet, usually on the last half, around afternoon-ish. Sometimes, you have to say, "let's push myself", and then you become stronger. Hope you can join us!

Can anyone tell me if leaves on the trees has changed colors yet, normally at least? I normally don't see beautiful leaves from southern CA.

    October 29, 2012

    • Carole

Hi Tommy. Butano is mostly in the redwood forest. So, there'll be some color, but mostly evergreens.

      October 29, 2012

  • Stephanie

If anyone is in Berkeley or Oakland I'd love to carpool - I believe the trip is 1.5 hours one way to Pescadero from Berkeley.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
