San Francisco Holiday Lights Hike

Hello All,

San Francisco's holiday lights, decorations, and landmarks will be the theme of our next hike. We will explore The City decked-out in its holiday-best and enjoy the beauty of the city by foot in the late afternoon and evening.

With a length of 6.5 miles with 630 feet of elevation gain, this hike will be easier than our usual intermediate-level hikes and will provide us with a leisurely exploration of San Francisco by night. *More details are listed below*.

There will be an optional dinner in SF after the hike.

WEATHER NOTE: If rain is likely on Dec. 8 based on the latest forecast on the day before the hike, I will reschedule this hike for Sat. Dec. 15

NOTES ABOUT TRANSPORTATION:
1. We will be taking Caltrain to the hike starting point. You can meet the group at the California Avenue station in Palo Alto or board at a station closer to your home. If you would like to join us on the train, we will try to be in the third car from the north end of the train (see details below).

2. If you are in the East Bay, BART is an excellent option. See details below.

3. If you prefer to pre-arrange a carpool from areas not served by Caltrain, PLEASE *DO NOT POST COMMENTS* TO THE WHOLE MEETUP GROUP TO PRE-ARRANGE CARPOOLS. Such postings lead to too much e-mail traffic on the list, and we have had lots of complaints. INSTEAD, PLEASE INCLUDE A NOTE IN YOUR RSVP INDICATING IF YOU NEED A RIDE, CAN OFFER A RIDE, OR BOTH AND FROM WHAT CITY (FOR EXAMPLE: “CAN RIDE OR DRIVE, MENLO PARK”). Then contact drivers or riders directly through the person’s profile or otherwise. Thanks!

SUMMARY OF KEY TIMES & MEETING LOCATIONS (details below):
2:10 PM: Meet at the California Avenue Caltrain Station, PALO ALTO (please arrive on time to make sure you have time to buy a ticket and catch the train)

2:27 PM: CALTRAIN Northbound (#435) train DEPARTS California Ave. Caltrain station.

4:00 PM: Meet at South Park section closest to 3rd Street & South Park Ave SF (HIKE STARTING POINT)

8:30 PM: Estimated time back at South Park, SF
** Optional dinner in SF after the hike.

Details are posted below.

I hope you can join us....

Your Organizer,
Julio M.

San Francisco Holiday Lights Hike, Dec. 8, 2012 - Sat
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DESTINATION: San Francisco: Exploration of holiday lights & decorations
DATE: December 8, 2012 (Saturday)
TOTAL LENGTH OF HIKE: 6.5 miles
TOTAL ELEVATION GAIN: 630 feet

TRANSPORTATION:
1. WE WILL BE TAKING CALTRAIN (#435) FROM CALIFORNIA AVENUE STATION, PALO ALTO. I encourage people on the Peninsula and in the South Bay to take Caltrain since the hike starting point is close to the Caltrain station in San Francisco (and of course you don't have to worry about finding parking or driving in SF).

NOTE: If you would like to board the train at one of the stops other than the California Ave. station in Palo Alto and join the group on the train, we will try to be in the third car back from the north end of the train. If the cars are the grey and red cars, we will be upstairs. Otherwise, if the cars are silver, we will be downstairs. If you can’t find us, call Julio M to meet up with us on the train.

2. FROM THE EAST BAY TAKING BART IS AN EXCELLENT OPTION. Get off at the Montgomery Station and walk down 2nd Street to South Park St. and turn right. Walk to far end of South Park to meet us.

3. CARPOOLING: If you prefer to pre-arrange a carpool from areas not served by Caltrain, PLEASE *DO NOT POST COMMENTS* TO THE WHOLE MEETUP GROUP TO PRE-ARRANGE CARPOOLS. Thanks!

COST: Caltrain roundtrip ticket ($14 for Palo Alto to SF)
NOTE: The hike organizer will ask for a voluntary donation of 3-4 dollars at the end of the hike to help cover expenses associated with the Meetup group.

ORGANIZER: Julio M.(contact info at end of description)

RAIN CANCELS.... If the weather forecast looks uncertain for the time of the hike, I will send out an e-mail and leave an outgoing message on my cell phone (# listed below) with the latest hike status information posted by 9 PM on the night before the hike.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION:
San Francisco's holiday lights, decorations, and landmarks are a treat at this time of year. We will explore The City decked-out in its holiday-best and enjoy the beauty of the city by foot in the late afternoon and evening.

From our meeting point at South Park we will walk up 2nd Street toward Market Street and enjoy this rapidly evolving neighborhood in the heart of the South of Market (SOMA) district. Crossing Market Street, we will enjoy the holiday lights along Montgomery Street, including the Bank of America building. California Street will take us by Old St. Mary's Church and up to the top of Nob Hill.

Nob Hill has a particular wealth of holiday vistas and traditions including the Gingerbread House and Christmas Tree in the Fairmont Hotel, the views from the summit, and the lights of Huntington Park and Grace Cathedral. After savoring these sights, we will head down to Union Square with its giant Christmas Tree, store lights, ice skating rink and much more. We will soak in the holiday mood and then hike to Grant Avenue and the heart of Chinatown.

Jackson Street, at the heart of the charming North Beach/ Financial District boundary, will then take us to the Embarcadero and the Bay front where we will enjoy panoramic views of the nighttime holiday skyline. Our route will then follow the edge of the Bay on the Embarcadero and return us to South Park.

There will be an optional dinner in SF after the hike.

Lights are not as good as last year's but nevertheless it was very much a pleasure hiking with Julio and group again. Looking forward to 2013! Btw it may be a record turnout last night, and it must be getting harder to keep track the names of all actual attendees :) Kudos!

@Paul, you can always check for yourself by clicking on the location (or the parentheses that says "map" by the location) to bring up a Google Map. It shows all the BART stops, as well as bus stops...

Is the Crossroads Cafe at 699 Delancy St, San Francisco, CA within walking distance of a BART station? If so, which one?

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
