Mount Tamalpais State Park Hike

Hello All,

Towering Mount Tamalpais is known for its splendor, lovely forests, and its spectacular views of the coast, San Francsico, Point Reyes, Marin County and more. Our hike will begin at the Rock Spring Parking Lot area part-way up Mount Tamalpais. On this hike we will treat ourselves to two of the highlights of the park: The view from East Peak and the charming Cataract Falls.

With a hike length of 8.8 miles and a total elevation gain of 1600 feet, our hike will be at our usual intermediate level. Please consider your physical condition and make sure you are able to handle an intermediate-level hike. *More details are listed below.*

PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO CARPOOL to minimize the impact of our large group on the parking lot at our destination. The parking lot at our destination has limited capacity so carpooling is especially important for this hike. Going to the designated carpool points in Palo Alto, North Peninsula, or San Francisco is an easy and quick way to get into a carpool. No prearrangement of carpools needed. BEFORE SEEKING CARPOOLS FROM OTHER LOCATIONS, PLEASE SEE DETAILED COMMENTS ABOUT CARPOOLING BELOW.

RAIN CANCELS.... If the weather forecast looks uncertain for the time of the hike, I will send out an e-mail and leave an outgoing message on my cell phone (# listed below) with the latest hike status information posted by 9 PM on the night before the hike.

* FURTHER DETAILS POSTED BELOW*

I hope you can join us....

Julio M.

CARPOOLING:
1. PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO CARPOOL to minimize the impact of our large group on the parking lot at our destination. Since the parking lots at Mount Tamalpais State Park are of limited capacity, carpooling is especially important for this hike

2. As usual, CARPOOLS DEPARTING FROM THE DESIGNATED CARPOOL POINTS ARE NOT GENERALLY PREARRANGED and are formed at the carpool location on the morning of the hike. So you can just show up and take it from there! This has worked fine every time. See the official carpool point meeting location(s) and time(s) below.

3. If you prefer to pre-arrange a carpool from areas not near the designated carpool point(s), PLEASE *DO NOT POST COMMENTS* TO THE WHOLE MEETUP GROUP TO PRE-ARRANGE CARPOOLS. Such postings lead to too much e-mail traffic on the list, and we have had lots of complaints. INSTEAD, PLEASE INCLUDE A NOTE IN YOUR RSVP INDICATING IF YOU NEED A RIDE, CAN OFFER A RIDE, OR BOTH AND FROM WHAT CITY (FOR EXAMPLE: “CAN RIDE OR DRIVE, MENLO PARK”). Then contact drivers or riders directly through the person’s profile or otherwise. Thanks!

You can assume that any event with this group is going to be large. That's a necessary consequence of not having an RSVP limit. Most of the other Meetup hiking groups curtail their attendance to 20 or less and have wait lists. That's the nice thing about having so many hiking groups: you can attend the ones that suit your preferences.

      2 · February 23, 2013

    • Gina

Well said Eric ... This group size might not be for everyone ... I love the vibe of this group ...

Posting this here as a lot of you were on the recent Almaden Quicksilver hike** - where we were talking about the structure / building on top of Mt. Umunhum. Well, here's a Santa Clara Park District program on just that! March 2nd - History of Almaden Air Force Station atop Mt. Umunhum Event Details at: http://www.active-days.org/EventId10678

[**Some of you may have noticed that for high RSVP events, the trimmed down list of attendees after the hike bears little resemblance to the list of people who actually attended. Must be a feature, of course!]

I am confused about the new meetup point at the park at Panoramic and Ridgecrest. I don't see the 2 roads connect. Is it more like Ridgecrest and Pan Toll road?

    February 22, 2013

    • Matthew

Hello Tommy I got the address it is 3801 Panoramic Highway Mill Valley, CA 94941 the only concern is that the address might not be GPSable because on google map it shows middle of nowhere at the state park. I found this direction Easiest access to Mt.Tam State Park is from highway 101, taking the Stinson Beach/Highway 1 Exit. This exit is between Saulsalito and Mill Valley/Tiburon. From the exit following Highway 1 to Panoramic Highway and into the Park. Juilio if you can confirm the address if this correct meeting spot let us know thank you Matt

You don't need to ask about the carpool points. Most people will drive to the carpool points with their cars empty. When they get there the number of cars leaving will be reduced to ensure everyone gets a seat. Just show up. You will end up either as a driver or a passenger. This what is meant by the instructions above.

    1 · February 17, 2013

Kal, a recent Meetup change broke this method. RSVP notes are not separate anymore. They are automatically converted into comments.

      February 18, 2013

    • Kal

Yes, I see that now. But, people can still contact drivers or riders directly through the person’s profile or otherwise. And, you don't need to repeatedly ask about car pooling at designated locations like California at Palo Alto. Yadira, just show up there.
