Hello All,

El Corte de Madera Open Space Preserve is located on the western slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains and offers a lovely mix of evergreen and redwood forests, creek-side trails, coastal and forest views, rare sandstone formations (Tafoni), and an original old growth stand of redwood trees. On a warm summer day this hike on the western side of the Santa Cruz Mountains offers the natural air conditioning of the coast-side air.

We will hike a moderately strenuous route of about 8 miles and stay cool under the redwoods.

See details below.

I hope you can join us.....

El Corte de Madera Open Space Preserve is located on the western slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains and offers a lovely mix of evergreen and redwood forests, creekside trails, coastal and forest views, rare sandstone formations (Tafoni), and an original old growth stand of redwood trees. On a warm summer day this hike on the western side of the Santa Cruz Mountains offers the natural air conditioning of the coastside air.

We will begin our hike at the Skeggs Vista Point Parking Lot. After a short walk on Skyline Boulevard to the trailhead, we will start by hiking along the Tafoni Trail which will take us to a special viewing platform where we can get an upclose view of this unique sandstone formation. Continuing along the Tafoni trail, we will turn left onto the Resolution Trail, which goes near the site of a 1953 DC-6 plane crash. We will then follow the Fir Trail and Methusalah Trail down to the Giant Salamander Trail which goes along El Corte de Madera Creek and which was recently reopened after a long period of closure.

Our hike will then take us along Timberview Trail and an opportunity to visit a rare grove of majestic Old Growth Redwood trees which survived the period of extensive logging in the Santa Cruz Mountains in the 1800?s and 1900?s. Next we will follow the Manzanita Trail and Fir Trail to our starting point.

DIRECTIONS from Palo Alto to the Skeggs Vista Point Parking Lot:
- Take Highway 280 North to the Woodside Road (Highway 84) Exit
- Head west on Woodside Road until you reach Skyline Boulevard
(Highway 35) [about 6.6 miles]
