Coal Mine Ridge Preserve in the Town of Portola Valley is just a few miles from the roar of Silicon Valley in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains and provides an oasis of serenity and wonderful opportunities for hikes amongst oaks, toyon, and bay trees. Wooded ridgeland with intimate views of Windy Hill and Portola Valley are a distinguishing feature of this preserve.

We will begin our hike parking lot at the northern edge of the instersection of Alpine Road and Portola Valley Road. Crossing Alpine Road, we will join the Sweet Springs Trail and continue on the Indian Crossing Deer Path. Our hike will then take us briefly along Bay Laurel Trail on our way to Arroyo Trail. Next, the Toyon Trail will allow us to catch glimpses of Corte Madera Creek and help us loop back to our starting point.

DIRECTIONS from Caltrain California Avenue Station to the intersection of Alpine Road and Portola Road:
- Take Page Mill Road heading West (toward the mountains)
- Follow Page Mill Road for about 3.6 miles
- Turn Right on ARASTRADERO ROAD
- At the end of Arastradero Road, turn left onto ALPINE ROAD
- Continue on Alpine Road until Portola Road
- Turn right and enter small business park where you will park.
