Reverse Dipsea: Stinson Beach to Mill Valley

The Dipsea Trail stretches 7 miles with 2300 ft. ascent/descent from Stinson Beach to Mill Valley, tracing the Redwood Creek watershed from the slopes of Mt. Tamalpais to the Ocean, ending at Old Mill Park. We will then hike another 1.5 miles on neighborhood and city sidewalks to get back to our cars. There is a bus line that runs hourly that would bypass much of that later part of the hike for those interested.

Meet at Mt. Tamalpias High School near the intersection of Miller Avenue and Camino Alto to take the West Marin Stage Coach Route 61 scheduled for 8:34 am. It will have us to Stinson Beach by 9:21am. Pace is expected to be approximately 2 miles per hour but with stops and lunch break we may be on the trail and the final neighborhood/city sidewalk stroll for 7 hours. The leader has not scouted this route – it is an adventure. In event there is not enough capacity on the bus to Stinson (not expected), plan B is to drive to Tennessee Valley to hike to/from Muir Beach for approximately 6 mile round trip with 1650 feet of ascent/descent.

Cancellation: Heavy Rain cancels. I will notify those who RSVP. Others may e-mail, call, or text if in question.

Bring: Layers, lunch, 2 or more liters water, snacks, headlamp, $20 and credit card. You will need exact change/bills for $2 bus ride to Stinson. You may want to have extra for food/beverage as we pass through Mill Valley on the way back to the cars or for additional bus fare. Trekking poles optional.

Meet at Mt. Tamalpias High School in Mill Valley at the corner of Miller Avenue and Camino Alto, specifically at the bus stop; bus picks up at 8:34 am and does not wait. We will take the bus to Stinson Beach to begin hike. Note, there is lots of parking on Miller northwest of the school that has no meters or time limit.

In addition to trying to arrange carpools via post on this site, you can also take Golden Gate Transit 70 to Marin City and catch the West Marin Stagecoach #61 there. Click Here for more info on West Marin Stagecoach http://www.marintransit.org/routes/61.html#weekend

I'm renting a City CarShare to get up there (barring a last minute ride offer!). I'm happy to drive someone else from one of the Mission BART stops.

Thanks for your feedback. Your Interest is noted and I'm hopeful that many hikes will be mid morning starts. This hike is earlier than normal due to logistics - public transit and one way hike.
