Even in modern, densely populated cities, people need access to nature. In San Francisco, development projects often include privately owned public open spaces, aka POPS. This completely flat urban hike will explore about 20 of these oases within a 10 to 12 block area. See how designers have blended together landscaping, sculpture, fountains, and various natural building materials to create comfortable, inviting pockets of nature where residents and weekday office workers, alike, can find respite from city noise and the harsh brick and mortar surroundings. Leashed dogs OK. Hike will last about 2.5 hours and end back on Market St, near our starting point. Cancellation: Any rain cancels. Bring: water, comfortable walking shoes, and layered clothing. Meet: at 1 pm in front of 555 Market St. (south side of street between 1st and 2nd Sts.) in San Francisco. Leaders: Russ Hartman, (650)[masked] and Paige Mendicino (paigemendicino [at] gmail.com.
