Oakland's Rose Garden, Grand Ave., Lower Piedmont~Paths and Stairs

Details: 3.5 miles.  600 feet total ascent.  Rolling terrain.

Time: Approximately 2 hours (including walk and rest times.)

Neighborhoods: Grand Lake, Piedmont.

Restrooms: Left side of Rose Garden entrance and additional restroom at Piedmont Park.

Meet: 10:30, ready to walk promptly at 10:45

This urban hike which begins in the Grand Lake area affectionately known as "The "Hood" includes Oakland's longest staircase, 217 stairs. It is a rolling up and down neighborhood walk and will offer a few paths, stairs and a short 200 foot very steep street going UP, of course ;)

After the hike, we will visit Morcom Rose Garden, named after Oakland Mayor Fred Morcom.  It was constructed in 1932 by landscape architect Arthur Cobbledick.  It was a project of the WPA (Works Progress Administration) and is one of the best kept secrets of Oakland.

There, we will explore several more staircases within the garden and can have a picnic lunch.

Thank you all for coming this AM. Jin and Pamela have posted some magnificent and cute pics taken with an artist's eye and really good cameras, apparently! I love seeing scenery through others' "lenses." The doggies are sooo cute. 'Til next time~

Thx Franny! Running a bit late! Which direction are you starting in?

Currently, I am on Colby Street in Rockridge. It is a three-mile hike to the starting point or an hour on public transportation.

If anyone can give me a ride, please call[masked]-2217. Thank you.

Best area to park? Does the walk end near starting point?

Well, the Best Best place to park is on Olive St., near Oakland Ave. It's at the upper entrance to the Rose Garden, not the main entrance. You have to walk around or through the Garden to get to the meeting place. And yes, we are ending up at the starting place.

No one from South Bay or Peninsula? If you like to carpool at Home Depot parking lot, University Ave Exit on 101, (or nearby parking lot) around 930a, please let me know. My car has 2 more spaces.

    Hi Steppers,

Please make sure to update your RSVP to "No" if you are unable to attend the Rose Garden Walk so that Wait-Listers may join. And Wait-Listers, please note that the RSVP is on Manual Control. That means that if there is a cancellation, it's first come first serve. The ensures that anyone who RSVPs Yes, is indeed interested and free to attend.

So watch your email closely, go to the event site and RSVP "Yes."

No-shows are not appreciated and may jeopardize your ability to join future walks.

Looking forward to an enjoyable urban hike...I scouted out the route yesterday and the perfumed air was amazing in both the garden and neighborhood!

    Franny

By any chance, anyone attending from Peninsula/South Bay can meet along I-880? I can drive. Thanks.

Marianne, AC Transit Bus 12 runs along Grand and you can pick it up on Broadway, I believe 12th St. and 19th St. BART stations. I do not know the time tables.

Carol, you will receive an email if someone cancels-and then it's first come, first serve to get a spot. You will be directed to go to the event site and RSVP Yes. See my message below.

I've updated this Meetup about the waiting list. If you plans change and you are unable to attend, please take a moment to update your RSVP to NO to open up a spot for a wait-lister. Wait-listers will get an email allowing them to change their RSVP to YES on a first come first serve basis. Thanks and look forward to stopping to smell the roses.
