Strenuous "Super" Full Moon Dinner Hike to the top of Yerba Buena Island

This is a super big night for hikes and walks as it's the night of the Super Full Moon, the time of year when the moon is at its fullest and closest to earth.  The next time will be in August 2014.

Cross-posted with Bay Area Anything Active: http://www.meetup.com/anythingactive/events/124582492/

I scouted the route today and this is turning out to be a fairly fast-paced, strenuous hike to the top of Yerba Buena Island. You must be in very good cardiovascular shape to keep up.  We will stop for views and pics.  If you have signed up and feel it's too much, please change your RSVP to "No." For a flat, slow option, you can tour Treasure Island on your own. After YBI, if there is time, we will explore a little bit of Treasure Island, too.

Meet: 6:45 PM, depart 7:00 PM sharp.

Walk: Approximately 1.5 hours, 3.5 miles RT, 600 feet elevation all uphill and stairs to top.

Bring:Warm clothes, water, dinner or snacks and a sense of adventure! It's often windy.

Transportation: Bus 108 from SF.  There is no bus from Oakland.  Easy parking near meeting point.

Celestial Bodies Schedule: Sunset 8:34 Moonrise 8:53 Last light 9:06

From 8:30-9:00+ pm, I plan on watching the sunset, bridge light show and moonrise while having dinner.  The vantage point for the light show isn't super close from TI, but it's still visible and the city lights are beautiful.

Heavy fog will cancel, so check for updates here or just look outside before heading out.

Waitlist Info: This event has a 'manual' waitlist. This means that when a spot opens up, everyone on the waiting list will receive an email. In order to claim the spot, you must visit this meetup event and RSVP "Yes". So watch your email closely. This approach avoids unintentional no-shows and ensures that the people who move up to "attending" are indeed available and interested. Please change your RSVP to "No" if you can not attend.  No-shows are noted and may jeopardize your ability to attend future events.  Thank you.

Based on what I can see / not as I'm crossing the bridge, I'll regretfully take up the offer for another time :-(

OK Steppers, well as you see, the fog is rolling in, but there's a good chance we'll be below the fog bank and still see the bridge views from the top of Yerba Buena and some SF City Lights. No promises! Doubtful about the moon, but we'll learn a little bit about the history of TI and YBI, too. I'm not canceling unless there is rain. If you want to come out for an "atmospheric" hike and learn a little bit about the history, I'll see you there! Dress extra warm in layers! We'll repeat on a clear night sometime.

I've opened up a few more spots. I am not canceling if there are overcast skies, light fog and/or drizzle. Rain isn't supposed to set in until midnight. Don't feel obligated to attend if you feel the weather is not for you. That's why I opened up some spots. Dress appropriately. Dinner may have to wait if the weather does not cooperate enough to be comfortable.

Looking forward to an interesting and beautiful Sunday evening on the 23rd. Please update your RSVP to "No" if you can not attend to allow wait-listed people an opportunity to join.

No-shows are noted and may jeopardize your ability to attend future events.

Thanks and see you then--hopefully a clear night. Heavy fog/rain will cancel. Check here for updates and look outside!

Remember, waitlist is on manual. Come to this event and change to Yes if you get an email that a spot has opened up.

    Thanks,

    Franny

I've been getting numerous messages from people on the waiting list who want to know how to change their RSVP to accept a newly open spot. Here's the answer for all:

Several days before the walk, guides change the waiting list from automatic (first come, first served) to manual. Manual means that when a spot opens up, everyone on the waiting list gets an email. The first person to visit the Meetup site and change his/her RSVP gets the spot. When Meetup sends that automated email saying that a space has opened up, there should be a link that takes you to the event sign up area. Even if there isn't a link, here is what you can do to take an open spot:

    Continued from previous comment...

    1) Go to our Meetup site on a computer. (Phone interface may not work.) 2) On the main page, find the announcement of the walk you are on the waiting list for. Click on the title, which opens all the walk details (which you should read anyway). 3) To the right is the attendance list followed by the waiting list. At the top of the attending list is a GREEN BOX that says CHANGE RSVP. Click on that. 4) Click the yes button and then click RSVP. (It works the other way to, if you want to change your RSVP from yes to no.)

It may be that by the time you try to accept the spot it has already been taken by someone else. I am sorry for that frustrating experience, but putting the list on manual is the only way to ensure that last-minute spots are taken by people who can still join us. Thanks!

Hi Franny, to clarify, we're each bringing our own portable dinner, correct?

Yes, everyone should bring their own dinner and drink (and shared snacks if you wish.) I am not going to be able to carry wine and cheese on this one!

Although I have not cleared my WL yet. But I like to find out where to catch bus 108 from SF. Because I am from South Bay, I am driving up to SF. THX!

Just look it up on the SF MUNI website. I don't know the details. Driving to TI is easy though.

To answer Tammy, Esther and Anna's waitlist question, too many people "kneejerk" and RSVP "Yes" to hold a spot or get an early waitlist position. Then there is a big drop off as RSVP's are changed to "No." Most of the time, it all works out and those who really wish to attend get to do so. Write me a message here closer to event date and I'll see if we have room to accommodate a few more people. I like to cross-post with Bay Area Anything Active, so consider joining there and getting on that waitlist, too, but only RSVP "Yes" to one Meetup Group!

Normally, I do put events on automatic wait list and change to manual for the last 24 hours, but this time I decided to do it manual since Sunday eve and weekday eve walks, in general, are the most difficult to attend and many people who would be bumped up to "Yes" really wouldn't be able to make it. This has been my experience. Sorry for any inconvenience.

    June 15, 2013

  • Anna M

Isn't the waitlist typically set up to automatically bump you up into the confirmed list at least till a day or so before the event after which you have to manually add yourself? Oh well -

SHOOT!!! didn't see the opening quick enough! Hope it still works out. REALLY want to go!
