San Bruno Mountain summit from Balboa Park Station

Participants seemed pretty pleased with our June 1 hike to San Bruno Mountain State Park, and several wished aloud that we'd continued to the summit. To satisfy them, and also those who had hoped for a Sunday hike, I'm booking this new date.

This almost qualifies as a brand new hike. We'll walk the Bog Trail again, and part of the Eucalyptus Loop Trail, but most everything else will be new. If you enjoyed yourself on June 1, please feel free to sign up again!

I'll give other cautionary notes below, but the most important one may be: This hike is five hours long! You'll be walking uphill for the first hour and a half. I think the effort will be worth it: we'll spend about two hours on the undulating Ridge Trail at the mountain summit, and (if the weather cooperates) will be treated to staggering views.

Meeting place: Bike racks/ivy plants adjacent to the Geneva Avenue South bus pad at the Balboa Park BART/Muni station.  My hope is that this meeting place will be more convenient for City Steppers than the Geneva/Prague location used last time.

Getting there, transit: After taking the stairs or escalator from the BART platform, look for the exit to Geneva Avenue South, and not Geneva Avenue North. You will emerge to street level next to a heavily-trafficked bus pad for buses traveling east on Geneva. You'll see the bike racks and ivy plants close by, a few steps farther back from Geneva. (They're visible from Geneva on Google Street View, too.)

The Muni KT and M light rail lines, and 8X, 29, 43 and 54 buses also stop at this station.

Note about possible BART strike:  A possible BART strike looms on the horizon, and could start as early as this Monday, July 1.  The last BART strike in 1997 lasted six days.  If you know you'll want to come by BART, rather than one of the Muni lines, you might want to see how the strike works out before signing up.

Getting there, car: This station does not include a parking lot. You probably can find street parking on the residential blocks surrounding the station ... but cars sometimes do get broken into and stolen in this neighborhood, and you might be the unlucky victim.

Cautionary notes/worth mentioning:

  • Starting time: In my other walks, I have scheduled a hike start that corresponds to the time we actually get underway. These prompt departures have caused problems for some, and I agree with Shella that it makes sense for City Steps organizers to follow the same procedures on meeting and departure times.

So, from this hike forward, I'm going to do things a little differently, as follows:

11:45 a.m., the listed start time for this hike, is when we will meet at the BART station. I will get there by 11:45 a.m. We will start walking fifteen minutes later, at 12:00 noon. 12:00 noon as in 12:00 noon sharp, en punto, on the dot. 12:00 noon exactly.

Please feel free to arrive anytime between 11:45 a.m. and 12:00 noon ... but for your own sake, please don't arrive after 12:00 noon. I'd go nuts trying to coordinate partway-through-the-hike rendezvous points, so will emphasize: if you arrive at 12:03 and the group is gone, please don't say I didn't warn you.

  • You'll be hiking for five hours, pretty much nonstop. That's two hours longer than the first San Bruno Mountain hike. (On the bright side, our two hours at the summit shouldn't be especially taxing; the Ridge Trail undulates gently most of the time.)

This hike is significantly more strenuous than other City Steps offerings. Before signing up, please ask yourself if you're ready to be on your feet for five hours, and to spend the first hour and a half of those five hours walking uphill. Please bring water.

  • I spotted a poison oak advisory near the Ridge Trail. Long pants are safer than shorts, although coverage from the knees down -- e.g., long socks -- probably matters most.
  • A small portion of the Ridge Trail and much of the Summit Loop and Eucalyptus Trails are rocky. Please wear good shoes with thick soles.
  • Our views depend on the weather. If the mountain is socked in by fog, we won't see much.
  • Dogs aren't permitted in San Bruno Mountain State Park. Fido doesn't get to come on this one, as much as I might enjoy meeting Fido; sorry!
  • Bathroom break: We can stop at the park rest stop on our way in and on our way out.

Forgot to say, we won't have our own transport, and it's our first time to SF! If there's a car share, can we join? Thanks :)
