Scaling Applications with Open Source Technology

Join Cloud Mafia for another great event to learn, network and discuss scaling applications with OpenSource technologies.  The event will be hosted at the Rackspace office in SOMA.

We have two great speakers lined up from Saltstack and Rackspace talking about scaling at a mass scale using OpenSource technologies.  Will dive into how to scale quickly and efficiently in real-time and the benefits of using Open Source.

Drinks/Networking: 6-7pm

Tech Talks: 7-8pm

Networking: 8-9pm

*Food and drinks will be provided compliments of Saltstack!

1. Thomas S Hatch, Founder/CTO, Saltstack

Automating the Internet Assembly Line at Web Scale With New OpenSource

New cloud factories and Internet assembly lines need to be fast and easily scalable. Unfortunately, much of the software traditionally used to build and manage data centers in decades past were never designed for the new speed and scale of the modern infrastructure. Fortunately, Salt, Jenkins, Git, Docker and other open source tools are now available to provide real-time data center automation and to help deploy and manage the entire enterprise application stack. Will show how these new open source tools are being used by infrastructure and DevOps teams at Web-scale organizations like LinkedIn, WikiMedia and Hulu.

2. Allen Oster – Sr. DevOps Engineer, Jason Swindle – Cloud Computing Specialist & Bruce Stringer- Sr. Devops Engineer, Rackspace

Scaling Graffiti: A Rags to Riches Story

Taking a python application from single server, to redundant juggernaut. The need for scaling in our environment and the unique challenges presented by limitations of resources. The reasoning behind the decisions we made and the pros and cons of each choice. The open source technologies we used, how they helped, and why we chose them over other solutions. The challenges of working as a small team with limited resources, and DevOps practices helped us succeed.
