Cohousing is is a community development model created with the design input of the residents, according to common goals such as sustainability, community, and living well by sharing more. It includes individual home ownership supplemented by shared ownership of additional facilities and common areas. Cohousing communities are self-managed by the residents using a proven system for self-governance, for example Dynamic Governance.
There are over two dozen cohousing communities in the Bay Area to date and we think it’s about time to build the first community here in San Francisco! We envision an inclusive community with residents of all ages and backgrounds, singles, couples, and families. We see this manifesting in a mixed-use development including residential, work/live spaces, and retail storefronts, food production, open space, and a common house to provide opportunities to know your neighbors, get involved, and live the good life, right here in the best city in the world.
Join this group if you are interested in learning more about cohousing and connecting to others in SF who share your interest. San Francisco, because of it's high real estate prices, has proven a particularly challenging environment for cohousing to take root. Though the concept itself is easy to embrace and has wide appeal, to be economically feasible for anyone but the very well-endowed, it will likely need to pioneer a new hybrid development model, possibly uber-green, involving a creative partnership between between private and public housing developers.
The dedicated group, know as the San Francisco Cohousing Active Organizers, or AOs, worked together for a little over a year on laying the foundation for such a community. In the course of their work [and play] together, individual members decided for various reasons to pursue other avenues. Some decided they would prefer to live in senior cohousing. Others decided a community outside the City would better suit them. A skeleton team attempted to carry on but as of June 2013, the AOs are no longer holding Plenary Meetings or working in their various committees.
Members are now welcome to post their own cohousing-related events, which will be announced subject to the approval of the Organizers. Off-topic posts will not be announced and will be deleted at our discretion. The Organizers reserve the right to revise this policy at any time.
Cohousing is an idea whose time has come. New leaders will emerge and it will happen in San Francisco. In the mean time we will be occasionally posting cohousing information that we hope will provide value and inspiration to anyone interested in cohousing in San Francisco.
