Time to step it up! Every year BACDS has a contra camp in the Santa Cruz mountains, and when we're lucky, amazing out of town staff becomes available to play for some of our local daces before they fly home, which is exactly what you can expect on Friday, June 28. Moreover, next Saturday July 6, we'll benefit again with the amazing music of the Syncopaths, so take a look at that upcoming event post as well!
Friday, we'll be very fortunate to be dancing to the music of the Avant Gardeners, coming to us from Charlottsville, Virginia. With Laura Light on fiddle and vocals, and George Paul on piano, the Gardeners bring you deep grooves, with a mixture of traditional and original tunes. Their style ranges from swing, Celtic, old time and rock and roll, and they are in high demand for camps and concerts coast to coast. George and Laura have a homegrown sound that points to many years of loving immersion in the contra music world, and they have many Bay Area fans.
They will be joined by multi instrumentalist Jim Oakden from Santa Cruz. Quite the camp veteran himself, you can expect Jim to be playing clarinet, mandolin, recorder, tenor banjo, and possibly guitar, piano and maybe even spanish bagpipes and French bombard. I probably forgot something. If he gets the bombard going, the dancers always go crazy!
And there's more! We'll be dancing to the calling of Seth Tepfer from Atlanta. Seth is one of my personal favorites. He always calls interesting dances, and with an extremely relaxed yet engaged style, has a way of making things that should be tricky very simple, and fills the room with warm enthusiasm. And he always encourages a little flirting.
