Major artist, anti-artist, aesthete, ?voyeur with a pornographic wit,? ?the exemplar of a certain modern condition? -- these are just a few of the characterizations one finds in critical discussions of Andy Warhol, whose life and work thematized in interesting ways celebrity, art, desire, death, and commodity fetishes ? often interlaced, of course, with a gay subtext.

A useful starting point for thinking about Warhol and his significance is Stephen Koch?s fascinating and brilliant Stargazer: Andy Warhol?s World and His Films. Even if you haven?t seen a single Warhol film (and most of us haven?t seen these rarely-screened pre-Paul Morrissey works like ?Kiss,? ?Blow-Job,? ?Sleep,? or ?I, a Man?), reading Koch?s critical reflections can be a revelation. For all those who sign up for our next meeting, our guest moderator and salon member Ken will email you a few selected passages from Stargazer which can serve as springboards for discussion. Also useful to read, if you have it, is Warhol?s own The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (From A to B and Back Again). But you needn?t come with any particular preparation to join in on this topic; all you need is a curious mind and an interest in looking beneath the surface of an artist whose life and work purport to be nothing but ?pure surface.?

It's been a few months since our last meet up and we look forward to seeing many of you!
