Grails at kaufDA, 500req/s, 5m unique/month

  • Mar 20, 2012 · 6:30 PM
  • Taulia

We will have Christoph Beckmann from kaufDA (an Axel Springer company) presenting how they develop and operate their systems on Grails.

Christoph will give an overview of the kaufDA system (500 requests/s, 5million uniques/month) and how new team members get productive fast in their setup.  He will show some internationalization problems they are solving and will explain why/how their bi-weekly releases are always deployed by the developers.  Of course he will also dive into some pieces of the kaufDA code-base.

kaufDA is a leading German site for local search and local promotion search.  The company enables users to look for the best local sales online, search brochures of local retailers and find stores near them.  It was bought in 2010 by Axel Springer - one of the largest German publishers.  The kaufDA project is full written in Grails.  Currently they operate with 500req/s, 5 million unique visitors/month and more than 800GB brochures for local deals and promotions.

Approximate timeline

  • 6.30pm - 7pm: Pizza and hanging out
  • 7pm - 8pm: Presentation
  • 8pm - 8.15pm: Finishing up

Christoph (22) is a lead developer at kaufDA and lives and works in Berlin.  He likes it to develop web projects in Grails.  Before joining kaufDA he worked as consultant for clients like IBM, the German army and some German startups.

Great and spot-on presentation about the stack and process at kaufDA. Deep technical knowledge and sharing of 'lessons learned'. Thumbs up!
