Public Homebrew Tasting/Competition

I'm working with a couple of different locations that are interested in hosting a Homebrew tasting event. The bar/restaurant would charge a small fee at the door (probably $10) and folks could come in and drink homebrews for free. Not only is this a great way for us brewers to get our beer into the mouths of strangers, but we could also give folks a bingo card to mark off any brews they have tried, and let them vote for their favorite! What would the winner receive? Who knows...I haven't thought that far ahead. As a place and date are chosen, I'll fill in the details. Better start working on perfecting your favorite brews!

You dont have to do every event...it would give others an opportunity to get brewing and out there. If you want help organizing I am in to help.

Great event . If we did this four times a year it would give more brewers a chance to join in the fun...

I'm with Gaz on this one! Twice a year sounds about right, and the smaller events can be more traditional "let's taste beers within our own group and comment" events, like the one at Golden Gate Park. As soon as it warms up again, I'll get the permits to do that one again!

Great event! Thanks for putting it together, Nate. Always good to be able to bring good beer to the masses. Looking forward to doing it again.

That was initially scary - passing my beers out to total strangers for the first time - but was a lot of fun. Aside from the occasional nutjob who thought everything "tasted metallic" and was "glad he didn't have to pay for it" all our brews went over well, and out of 20+ beers on show, I didn't taste one bad one. Kevin's jalapeno ale, Johnathan's porter, and Olivier's honey bunny in particular knocked my socks off.

A fantastic event for the brewers and publicans alike. Had a chance to finally meet some of the other members of the club and to share beer outside of my garage. The tasty pizza was just a bonus.

Wow! What an amazing event! Thanks so much to the 10 brewers that lugged their homebrew from near and far to participate in this event. I'll have the ballots counted today and will soon announce the winner!

Big thanks to Nate and everyone else who had a hand in oganizing the event and seeing it through. By all reports, it was a great session with good beer and a keen crowd. Would love to do it again!

Anyone carpooling from the Haight/Cole Valley/Inner Sunset area?

    February 26, 2012

  • Nate O.

There's still room for more folks to dispense beer at this event! Email me if you're interested! Ideally, you would have 2x5 gallons of beer to bring to this, but if you brew smaller batches, I think you'll be fine. I'm mostly just hoping to bring a mix of styles to the event.

Update: In lieu of the unknown popularity of this event and the showcasing of fancy pizzas, the cost at the door will be $15. If they run out of pizza, the cost drops down to $5. Thanks!

Since each brewer will have to be on-hand to dispense their beer, answer questions, etc., we will have to limit the number of folks dispensing. I'm hoping it's about 10 people. If we have more people than that interested, it will become a first-come sign-up list. No worries if all who want to participate in this can't do it this time...I've got another location in SF that wants to do the same thing in April!

Nate, do you need to know beforehand what we're entering? Or can we just bring a bunch of brews and have people try them out?

Thanks for the link. Interesting concept. I think for this event, I'll just bring the kegs and CO2 - just makes things a bit easier.

Hi Brian... Tasty McDole from the Brewing Network bottles from a keg to bottles with out a beer gun or counter pressure bottle filler. He uses a picnic tap and a piece of tubing. Wont hold up long term but will work for something like this. Here is a link to a discussion about it.

I don't think there will be any limitations on what you decide to serve your beer from. You will be the pouring it into tasting glasses, so if you want to open 100 bottles vs use any size/type of keg, it's all fine by me!

The only homebrews that I have right now are sitting in 3gal kegs, and I don't think I'll have time to put together another batch before this event. Would it be OK to bring the kegs in for sampling, or will the venue limit things to bottles only?

Date is almost finalized! It's looking like the last Sunday in February, the 26th. We will only be able to host a limited number of brewers this time, but no worries, we'll do this again before you know it! As of now, we've got about 6 weeks to make some tasty brews, so get crankin'!

Hey gang, an update! Looks like there will definitely be two of these events...one in February and one in April. Get your favorite brews going! The first event will be at Addie's Pizza Pie in Berkeley (off the beaten path a bit, but that's a good thing for a first attempt at this type of event). The second will be held in a bar in the southern end of San Francisco. More details as the dates are finalized.

Hey Nate, as we talked about already I've been thinking about doing this as an event for melanoma so I have a couple of options for places that might work out as well!

@Gaz hahaha...you're right! He should get a medal just for the fast progress he's making as a new(ish) brewer!

Yep, definitely a 2012 event. I'm sure we're all busy enough as it is through the rest of 2011!

Super idea! Question is before or after the holidays?
