another full moon ride in the Marin Headlands

Hi everyone, I hope those of you with lights (or who can borrow some) can join us for this full moon night ride on the evening of Friday, April 26! (OK the full moon is technically on April 25, but I can't ride that night, and it will still LOOK like a full moon the next evening.)

We'll meet at the Velo Rouge Cafe (address above) and then ride through the Presidio on the Bay Area Ridge Trail to the Golden Gate Bridge, over the bridge and up Conzelman Drive, and then do a loop in the Marin Headlands consisting of Coastal Trail, Bobcat, Marincello, Old Springs, Miwok, Valley, back to the bridge on Bunker Road and back to SF across the bridge and through the Presidio. All these trails are legal.

The ride is roughly 24 miles total on a combination of paved roads, bike paths, fire roads, and a little bit of singletrack. None of the trail sections are highly technical, but it is not a beginner ride due to the lighting conditions.

We should get back to SF by around 10:30 p.m. and for those of us who want to get some dinner or a drink afterwards we can ride over to one of the Thai or Japanese places on Clement St. near the Presidio after the ride. A few of them are open late for dinner.

Please bring a helmet and good lights (i.e. lights strong enough to light up the trail in front of you). We'll ride at a social pace with no rider left behind.

I am limiting the group size to 10 just because of the length of the ride and my desire to keep the group together from start to finish. Hope to see some of you for the full moon!

Please read the group's responsibility and liability statement, as always:

Hey Kent - can I pick up the ride somewhere near the bridge? Don't think I can get to the start point on time tonight!

Yeah, of course. I will send my cell phone number to you in an e-mail. Maybe meet at the little gift shop right next to the east-sided pedestrian/bike path at the south end of the bridge?

Hey Guys. Pretty bummed but my knee is aggravated and I'll be missing this ride and potentially more. Going to go to the doc and find out whats up. Hopefully it's not too long before I'm out again.

I feel your pain (literally). My left knee has been in pain since our epic Skeggs climbfest. I could barely walk for 3 days after, and it's maybe 80% healed now but still has some annoying lingering pain. Good luck getting it resolved, and hope to see you on a ride soon.

Hope your knee gets better soon, too, Ryan! We will miss you tomorrow night in Marin!

I'm thinking of doing this ride, but I've never done a night ride before. How much different is this ride at night compared to the day?

Yeah, I would say the same thing. A good handlebar light is all you need, and I'd recommend something brighter than 800 lumens or so. There aren't really any switchbacks or technical sections on this route, so you can easily do it without an additional helmet light.

Thanks for the info, but something has come up and I don't think I'll be able to make it on Friday. Have Fun!

I've been exploring the trails through the Presidio a bit more, so we can take them as far as possible to the bridge instead of switching to pavement like last time!

Hi, I may be on a singlespeed this Friday; how much climb?? I fear my geared mtb will be in shope; due for new rotors, rear delairer (major shifting issues today on ride). Thanks

Sorry, rather new the area so have never ridden this trail. I can go around China Camp pretty well but anything stepper than 3-4% I'll be toast on singlespeed.

Hawk Hill averages between 6-8% grades... luckily the steepest pitch is near the beginning in the saddle, so you could probably make it up on your single speed, but you probably wouldn't be comfortable doing it.

Hey Teresa, this ride is next-next Friday, the 26th. I would hope/expect your MTB to be back in action in plenty of time!

Well the work is like $$ and I'm not sure if I can drop $$ this week. New rear derailer, 2 rotors, etc. with labor. On a single white girl budget. :) Well have fun and I hope to join when bike is fixed up. Off to road bike I guess.

Sounds good. I might pick you guys up somewhere in the Presidio if that's cool...

Best place to pick up the ride would probably be at the plaza area by the Golden Gate bridge, by the statue.
