China Camp + back side

  • Oct 6, 2013 · 11:00 AM

We'll meet at the kiosk at the entrance to the China Camp State Park campground (right off N. San Pedro Road), and ride a roughly 15-16 mile loop. Parking is free and very easy on the shoulders of N. San Pedro Road. The route will be: climbing up Bay View, to Echo, to the top of the old Nike radar site, down around the back side, back up the fire road (backtracking to Echo), down Echo, across to the east side of the park on Bay View and Oak Ridge, and then back to the starting point on Shoreline.

The track is fast-rolling hard-packed dirt singletrack, with a few short paved road and fireroad connector sections. There is not much sustained climbing because the highest point in the park is only somewhere around 900 feet. The route is maybe 90% beginner and intermediate singletrack, with a few tricky advanced sections on both sides of the hill which require caution.

I'm setting a limit of 10 riders for this one because I want to make sure we can keep the group together for the entire ride. We'll ride at a decent pace, but with no rider left behind.

Hope to see you all out there! Maybe some lunch at Sol Food in San Rafael after the ride?

Please ride the group's rider responsibility and liability statement:

Awesome ride! Great leadership, Kent, for making sure nobody was lost or left behind. Trails showed noticeable erosion after just a few months.

This was our GPS track today (slight beginning+ending detour for me).

Hi gang, I crushed yesterday's Gran Fondo (100 miles, 9,000 ft) and in the process I somehow managed to beat Levi Leipheimer to the finish line. Needless to say the legs aren't cooperating this morning, so I'm going rest today. But, if you want a delish post-ride brew then check out the club and you’ll be glad you did. http://touristclubsf.org/

    Prost,
    Marshall

Is anyone driving from SF and has room for myself and my bike? I'd love to join, but don't have transportation out there. I'll definitely pitch in for gas/toll!

Fyi the backside is not technically 'open' nor is it legal. Not that any of that matters ; )

One of the more recent comments (Dec. 2011) on mtbr.com reports an interaction with a San Rafael PD officer who told the rider if it's not signed it is legal to ride. If anyone has more recent info or experience on this, though, please let us know.

Most trails on the backside are not illegal and it does matter because these meetup groups do not endorse poaching!

And btw I'll be racing the Levi Gran Fondo in Santa Rosa on Saturday, so I'm not sure if I'll be in a position to ride. But, if my legs feel good then I'll smoke the trails with ya!

Sounds good. Hope to see you out there.

How does attendance get marked after we ride? It's not too important but I went to ride with another MeetUp Mtb Group and the leader said that I haven't made any rides. Actually I've made every ride that I signed on with. Last week, again, my name wasn't ob the Attended List. How does it work?

    September 28, 2013

    • Kent

I'm sorry I don't know the answer to this, Mike.

      September 29, 2013

    • Kent

I just checked the last China Camp ride with our group and you are listed as having attended it.
