Performing at Your Best: Effective Speaking, Interviewing and Networking

  • Jan 11, 2011 · 10:00 AM
  • Valencia Gardens

As 2011 embraces us, the fact remains the most effective method for finding your way into a job is networking. Your employment doctor recommends attending four networking events each week. That's not all your doctor recommends. She also says you need to deliver a top notch interview. And you need to maintain your A-game personality for the whole job search, overcoming cynical and demoralizing impulses, to reach success. But how do you take all this medicine without a gag reflex to too much career advice?
SFPCN has the right medicine for you, delivered by performance coach Jonathan Bender, the founder of WholeSpeak and Get Real Networking. He'll provide practical tips to assist you in "performing" the best version of yourself - both authentically and effectively. Whether for a speaking engagement, networking events, or a job interview, you shall walk away with tools and techniques to: -
Connect and engage others effectively at networking events; -
Speak about yourself and your work with confidence; -
Display greater charisma and presence; -
Overcome nervousness when speaking or interviewing; and -
Impress others, while feeling great in the process. See you on Tuesday as we prepare the SFPCN community to make an impact on the job market.
Presenter Biography Jonathan Bender, MS and MFA, founded WholeSpeak to help people quickly transform their skills through a whole-person approach to communication, public speaking, and "everyday performance." A tremendous amount of positive energy in the room. Relaxation techniques in preparing for an interview were very beneficial.

The focus was on how to be fully present and relaxed when meeting people so that your networking is truly making connections with people. We did simple exercises in breathing, relaxation where tension is usually stored, and practice in pairs with our pitches. Big consciousness shift in the room. Thanks as always to Jim, George and Karen who have transformed what a Meet Up can be.

Jonathan instructed us to pay more attention to how we're using our words. The importance of paying attention to our audience and knowing when to fluctuate our voice or speed up our conversation. Most importantly be fully engaged in whatever you're doing.

Good speaker and I thought it was great when he said not to apologize for being out of work.

Thank you Jonathan for such an inspiring, informative and practical session. It was wonderful to see our room full of energy and fun. The tips, practices and good sense will all benefit me and I hope many others.

Jonathan taught me the value of being direct over being indirect, believing in your values, and asking for what you need without embarrassment.

Good speaker. Very unique presentation. Useful pointers that you don't usually think about.

Jonathan shared examples of how using the mind-emotional-physical "body" can free one to speak authentically and more comfortably. Being very introverted, I can be squeamish about getting involved in interactive excercises. I can't say that I was completely comfortable trying all of the ones that Jonathan offered today, but they certainly gave me a good taste of how much easier and more genuine networking--and delivering that pesky "elevator pitch"--can be. Today's session was a great stretch experience for me.
