This is the last email that will be sent regarding tonight's San Francisco Random Adventurer's Meetup:

Flavor Trip to a FREE Miracle Fruit Party! *MUST BYO Taste Pairing Contribution*

We are T-2 hours, and the guest list is now closed.  Thank you all for your generous contributions and great enthusiasm.

The event starts at 7:00 PM, and will last until 9:00 PM or 10:00 PM.  We will meet near the entrance of the event around 7:00 PM.  Please note that I'll be wearing a an over-sized, charcoal-grey wool coat; black glasses; black leggings and boots; and a black top -- if you need to find me in a crowd.  Otherwise, if for any reason you cannot find the group, please text my cellphone at the number provided in the final email.

Don't forget to bring your pairings, as they will make a great additions to our "stone soup!"  As a final reminder, this is a potluck style event, so please bring a taste pairing with you for the party.

Tips, Suggestions, and Guidelines:

• Dairy products or any products with fat content, such as chips or chocolate may alter your flavor trip, slowing it down or ending it.  Try to save these items for later in your trip.  If you do not like your flavor trip for any reason, then head for the fatty foods!

• Vinegar and hot sauce, along with other highly acidic or spicy foods may taste delicious in combination with the effects of the Miracle Fruit, but they are still vinegar and hot sauce.  Don't ingest too much at once, as there is a possibility of choking.

• If you get acid reflux, come prepared with antacids. This is a night-time event, so watch your caffeine intake as you normally would.

• Alcohol is allowed at the event, but as always, ONLY those who are 21+ may bring and/or consume alcohol.

• Please do not drink and drive.[freespace] is providing kitchenware, but if you would like to bring Dixie Cups, toothpicks, small paper plates, and/or napkins it would be greatly appreciated.

• Please enter this experience with an open mind, as this is a new experience, and we will all be experiencing it together.

FLAVOR LOG DID NOT SEND PROPERLY!

Again, thank you all for your amazing enthusiasm and event support.  I look forward to meeting up with you all there.

Cheers,

Mel

Greetings Future Flavor Trippers:

Please keep an eye out for an important email providing information on how to meet up, taste tripping tips, a flavor log, and last-minute details and reminders.

I'd like to remind everyone to update their RSVPs ASAP, along with posting updates regarding your taste pairings, so we can coordinate as best possible and show SFIOP, [freespace], and EVERYONE that we San Francisco Random Adventurers are AWESOME guests!

Nanu Nanu, Future Flavor Trippers!

It's a MIRACLE! It looks like we have an actual set time and location for this experience, thanks to J's contributions in the event comments section below.  (Thanks for looking out for us J.)

The San Francisco Institute of Possibility (SFIOP) is hosting a Miracle Fruit Party this Wednesday at [freespace] in San Francisco.  The tasting party is set to begin at 7:00 PM and should last until 9:00 PM or 10:00 PM (as both end times are noted in the web entries).

I know the looming BART strike is making the "trip" seem hard, but hopefully we can get a group together to sweeten the experience and add some fruit to that loom....  Who knows, there may be a miracle (fruit)?! All of the details from the blog on SFIOP's site are included below, and you can find more information about the venue by visiting the event calendar at [freespace].

Don't forget to tastefully BRING FOOD/DRINK ITEMS (lemons, hot sauce, etc.) to pair and share, as this event is FREE, with SFIOP providing Miracle Fruit -- and guests, such as ourselves, providing the test tasters!

Hack your Taste Buds! Miracle Fruit Party!

Miracle Fruit is a berry. When you eat it, an enzyme is released in your mouth that bonds to your taste buds and changes the way things taste. For the next hour sour becomes sweet.

Imagine the possibilities. How would you like to make lemonade – without adding sugar? Or taste the most aromatic, refined, 40-year-aged balsamic vinegar out of a $1.29 bottle of cooking vinegar from Safeway?

The San Francisco Institute of Possibility invites you to a Miracle Fruit party on Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 7-9. It’s at Freespace, 1131 Mission Street @ 7th.

It’s completely free — [they’ll] bring the Miracle Fruit, [we] bring foods to taste and share! (Wachs, B. 2013.)

    Party People!

Please see the BETTER FLAVOR LOG on the discussion page.

I'm running A BIT behind, as you can see, due to a number of technical difficulties that I've had in coordinating my first Meetup!

Kurtis Seid volunteered his assistance earlier, and I have asked him to run point until I resume upon arrival.

    Thank you for your understanding!

Kurtis, if you can no longer assist, please let me know!

    Thanks again.

    Cheers,

    Mel

It will be a bit more organized if we do it on our own. There was basically no direction from the freespace coordinator. In fact we had to ask who was even running it since everyone was just sitting around eating.

      October 24, 2013

    • Mellisa

I agree. It was a mad house I tell you! Everyone was tripping out man! And then they got BAD acid ... reflux ... BAD ACID REFLUX! But, no, I totally agree with you. I had coordinated with their event coordinator (OR SO I THOUGHT), but it was a free-for-all (which maybe I should have better anticipated). It wasn't until I attended [freespace], that I truly learned that it is just that: a "free space!" I'm glad that we have some good experience in this area now, though, so we can plan better in the future. Thanks everyone for bearing with me on my first "hosted" event on here.

Since Mellisa will be late, look for me near the entrance. Black jacket, blue jeans, and a duffle bag.

Thanks Kurtis. I'll see you there. If you are near a printer I made nice PDF spreadsheets for everyone, that I ultimately couldn't load. There is a new post of the flavor log on the discussion board page, but the PDF files are way nicer. Thanks again.

Thank you for ALL of your generous contributions and enthusiasm! [freespace] will provide kitchenware, but it doesn't hurt to bring paper plates, Dixie Cups, napkins, and/or toothpicks if you have them. Good question! Thank you for asking.

Ohhhh, I always wanted to try this. I was tempted to host my own party once but I got lazy and never furnished my place... anyhow, I'll bring some Guinness and celery!

    1 · October 22, 2013

    • Mellisa

Thank you for your enthusiasm. Please remember that Miracle Fruit changes the way our taste buds perceive different flavors, so anything that is sweet -- without any sour, acidic, or bitter qualities -- will become hyper-sweet. Please stick to the suggestions list above. As soon as you give me an update, I can post it to the list. Thank you again.

    1 · October 22, 2013

    • Mellisa

If you want to bring grapes as well, it would be very generous. Grapefruit is said to be very delicious and addicting with Miracle Fruit. I don't know how grapes will go over, but it should be interesting to try out too. Thank you.

I have a bunch of ripe bananas I can bring.

    1 · October 22, 2013

    • Mellisa

Sure. The information I've read recommends more sour options, as sweet pairings may turn hyper-sweet. Do you want me to put you down for the bananas?

      October 22, 2013

    • Mellisa

Thank you. I'm sure they will be interesting to try. Hopefully someone will bring green bananas too, so we can compare!

    Lemons and/or limes.

    1 · October 22, 2013

    • Mellisa

We already have Ben bringing "a big bag of lemons!" Lemons are popular as a pairing. Limes would be a hit too. Can I put you down for limes?

      October 22, 2013

    • Mellisa

If you want to bring the lemons as well, it couldn't hurt, though I'm not sure how big Ben's "big bag of lemons" is! :) Thanks again.

      October 22, 2013

  • Crystal

I already have some 100% cranberry juice I can bring. The stuff is really good for you, but taste sooo bitter/sour. Should be an interesting one. I'm going to run to the store tomorrow and pick up some other things as well. Have to talk to the people I'm going with on what they can contribute. I want to try Salt and Vinegar chips, Grapefruit, Sour Cream, and Cream Cheese. Not sure if I can afford to get enough for everyone though. I'll do what I can.

    1 · October 22, 2013

    • Mellisa

Thank you for your enthusiasm and giving spirit!

Cranberry juice is a great idea! I'll update the list and put you down for the juice for now.

Melissa has signed up for grapefruits, but they are a major hit with Miracle Fruits. The more, the merrier. Because grapefruits are bitter and sour, they are an excellent choice

Sour cream and cream cheese are said to taste like cheesecake or frosting. Also, I've read that creamy foods tend to coat the mouth and diminish the properties of the Miracle Fruit, so it's not to be overdone and should be saved as a later stop on our flavor trip! If one does not like the trip (aka, I'M FREAKING OUT MAN!), then the creamy options would be a saving grace.

One of the websites listed after suggestions has serving information, however, you can't be expected to be the only one providing for our group plus whoever else is attending the event at [freespace]. Though, anything you could add would be great! (I'm very interested in trying the chips.)

The BART strike makes me a bit nervous to attend this. Is anyone planning on coming over from the East Bay? Rides and/or extreme bus adventure?

    October 21, 2013

    • Mellisa

I'll be coming from the East Bay. It looks like there is going to be a good turnout if these RSVPs are current.

      October 21, 2013

    • Mellisa

I'm either taking public transit, or if someone has a spot in their car for the trip there and/or home, I'd be eternally grateful! :)

      Park or?

      July 31, 2013

    • Mellisa

Probably a park or at someone's place if they are gracious enough to want to host. It's entirely legal!!! They are magic berries not magic mushrooms! LOL. They change the way your taste buds perceive different flavors. Seems like an interesting shared experience to suggest. I'm up for suggestions and collaboration. :)

      July 31, 2013

  • Mellisa

The article had a couple potential purchasing sources. I believe at least one would be possible for online purchasing. Apparently each berry costs about $3, so if we charged $5 for the event (depending on attendance), we could use the remaining $2 on ordinary food items (like mustard, beer, and hot sauce) that would be transformed into a culinary journey. I'm brand new to Meetup, so I don't really know how this group plans events. However, I would love to help out wherever I'm needed, and I hope that we can pick up some more possible attendees and see what happens. Thanks. :)
