Just came across this TechCrunch article
about the round Supercell just raised, but the most interesting part? They also released their Q1 earnings-- $179 million. But wait, it gets better. After expenses and Apple's 30% cut they still NETTED $104 million... in a quarter.
To put that into perspective, Rovio's earnings
for the entire YEAR of 2012 were $195 million. Supercell came close in one quarter. A bit of clicking around on Quora led me to this blog post
by Deconstructor of Fun, which i found to be a pretty good analysis of Clash of Clans and what makes it so compelling from a gameplay perspective. Supercell is proving beyond a doubt there is plenty of monetization opportunity on mobile.
We all know that there has been a huge push to mobile, and while the industry is old enough now to show some trends it is still very much anyone's game-- take Rovio. Once the King of the space, one now has to wonder if they're going to be able to innovate themselves out of the Angry Birds franchise. For the time being it looks like Supercell has a winning formula, perhaps the winning formula-- but as we've seen with Rovio the landscape is constantly changing. For the time being though, cheers to Supercell on an astounding first quarter of 2013 (and everybody else, get your nose to the grindstone!).
