Muir Woods 10 mi

Meet at the Muir Woods entrance. Warm up along the Redwood Trail before chugging up the Heather Cutoff. Grind out the Coastal Fire Road climb with epic views to Stinson Beach returning to Muir Woods via the Ben Johnson "flume".

here is a map.

http://www.insidetrail.com/wp-content/themes/insidetrail/course_maps/Mt_Tam_Course_Map.pdf

generally it's pink loop up - orange down. (with an extension to pantoll for water)

*The heather cutoff is especially cool with a group. It's narrow with tons of switchbacks - good for momentum.

**an optional / additional 5mi loop follows the Fern Creek, Redwood, Sun and Dipsea trails for a punchy climb followed by rolling and downhill terrain with great footing. Combining  both loops is the "14mi long run" for week #3 of the training schedule below...this is most of the orange loop.

The meeting spot is THE ENTRANCE to the park. there are several benches there. it's where the drop off lot and busses are. not to be confused with a visitor center / gift shop INSIDE the park. call me BEFORE SATURDAY if yer not familiar and want more description. I doubt you can get a cell signal there for help if yer confused. [masked]
heat - come early to ensure we are running at 9am in cooler air. the climb is exposed.
water - I will stash water at the heather cut off.
fast / slow - I suspect anyone planning on doing both loops will be charging a little harder on loop #1 which works well since they can get going on loop #2 sooner so we all finish together (kind of). i'm game for some lawn time at the pelican inn afterwards and hope to see everyone there eventually (the contingency plan). they have fat pitchers and pub fare. bring yer blankie and beanbags.
if you suspect the heat, an injury or hangover will have you pacing slower than the pack, consider establishing a buddy on the same program and watch out for ea other. everyone should print out and carry the map if u don't know the route.

play by play - MW park entrance. redwood. heather cutoff. coastal fire road. old mine. pantoll. stapleveldt. ben Johnson. hillside. p lot.

I liked Coast View trail's switch back. It's not a trail run unless I get lost so promptly after Pantoll I was told by rangers to head over to Stapelveldt which allegedly would directly take one to Ben Johnson. NO it did not, ended at the back of the Mt. Tam, added 3 miles, but all is good. Sorry can't keep up with you all as per usual, but it's not how fast I get there it's that I get there, eventually. :) Thank you all for your patience. Needed to head out for a party right after, so couldn't stay for lunch. We drove by the luncheon joint, very pretty! Thank you Dan for organizing it. Neat route. Good to see you all. Until next time.

To avoid another potential amateur hour by me, I was wondering if anyone would be chalking the interactions? If not, that's alright. Thought I'd ask, just in case. Happy to supply the chalk at starting line.

Dan, how would you describe the difficulty level of next weekend's run compared to yesterday's? I'm THRILLED to have made it through without any blood or bruises, but I had several near misses.
On long runs, when fatigue sets in, my proprioceptive skills decline and risk of tripping increases. Perhaps I should develop my hill-climbing strength & stamina on non single-track trails? Are any of your upcoming runs less "technical"? Thanks!

    • Dan N.

oh yea. i'd say next weeks is similar in that there's a warm up flat then a climb then a downhill. however the flat is longer, the climb continuously exposed and the downhill through old growth redwoods thru the Nat'l park (f'n cool). I think you will dig the transition from flat to climbing because there's so many switchbacks. makes it manageable. more momentum. less pushback. steady eddy - not a punch in the nose.

    • Paul M.

I agree w/Dan and it's my favorite finish going down those switchbacks at the end and shady.
