  • Hi all! I am training for R2R2R in late Sept and need some help with my last 2 big runs. I have a good 24 mile route running up Mt. Diablo and then back down. We can add mileage based on how we feel...but we'll see :) Any help for my runs on 8/30 and 9/6 would be awesome.

Here are directions from the city including the trailhead starting point: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/San+Francisco,+CA+94109/37.8942224,-122.0327401/@37.8897073,-122.0421048,15z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m5!1m1!1s0x808580e970a548cb:0x19375086eaa8b308!2m2!1d-122.4212424!2d37.7929789!1m0

    Turn by turn directions:

Turn R at the fork at the entrance

.37mi (after passing the dry "frog pond" on your right) turn R onto the Briones to Mt Diablo Regional trail

.9mi R at the fork to stay on Briones to Mt Diablo Regional

2.2mi stay straight on Briones to Mt Diablo Regional trail

2.45mi stay straight/right at the fork to stay on Briones to Mt Diablo Regional

2.82mi stay straight to continue onto Mt Diablo

3.97mi stay straight to continue onto Green Valley Rd

4.66mi turn L (not sure of trail name)

5.14mi turn R (not sure of trail name)

5.5mi turn L onto Wall Point Rd

8.16mi (when you hit S Gate Rd--don't cross the road) turn sharp L onto Summit Trail

8.46mi turn L to stay on Summit Trail (again, don't cross road)

9.85mi turn R to stay on Summit Trail

10.4mi L at fork to stay on Summit Trail (R is a fire road, will get you to the same place)

11.47mi L at fork to stay on Summit Trail

11.73mi you're at the parking lot.

Turn around and come back down... :)

I have a car so I can drive those who are coming from SF.

Lindsay- If you're still doing this run I'll come along. Let me know.

I hope everyone realizes that the only place you can get water on this route is at the summit; water is shut off at Juniper Campground and at the other campsites in Mt. Diablo. If it's hot that day I think you'll need to carry at least 60oz. You don't want to get dehydrated on Diablo.

I did a 14 miler on Diablo about 3 weeks ago. A friend of mine who was running with me was carrying about 1.5 liters. I was carrying twice as much. She ran out of water with about 3 miles to go and had to drink from my hydration pack.

Think I'm going to do the headlands run that day instead . . . need to practice running out there for the night marathon I'm doing on those trails!

Lindsay, can you add some suggestions for shorter loops too? There's been some talk about running Diablo lately, so this is great!

Also looks like many of the faucets are shut off, so bring plenty of water! http://parks.ca.gov/?page_id=517

Hi Lindsay, I'm up for running the whole 24 miles with you on Sat Aug 30. Slight chance I might be out of town, but I'll update my RSVP a week before.

And do you know what the parking situation is like there? From the same google link, it states that the North Gate entrance opens at 8am.. I haven't run from North Gate before, but certainly will be interesting to try something new!

meetup forced me to put in an address. The trailhead that we would start at is near my friend's parents house so we would just park near there. I will update the meetup to make sure this is known. thanks for pointing it out!

I'd be in! But 24 miles might be a tiny bit aggressive for me...maybe a 15 or 18 miler?

Maybe we can work out a shorter route option where people can still make it to the summit... in a perfect world...
