Hello, my name is Daniel VanRenselaar. Most know and refer to me as simply "Van". It is my great pleasure and honor to teach the primitive fire class. I am collaborating with Jim LaJoie for this event, and we will both be coaching everyone through a lot of material.
We are going to be exploring several friction methods, spark ignition, and pneumatic fire starting. Quick methods for tinder bundling, a number of different fire lays, and crafting your own primitive fire tools from what is immediately available will also be covered.
This is going to be a split-site meetup. At nine sharp, we will be in the mouth of massacre canyon, collecting material for bow and hand drills and identifying viable ignition sources. Ten o'clock we will be headed over to the Col. Lewss Millett park on N. Ramona blvd. The reason for this is that they have bbq pits and so permits are not an issue. Also, I want us to face the adversity of irregular wind and sunlight in building our fires as these are real world issues. There are two large shaded areas and several benches on site.
Because of the split-site arrangement, I will have to be firm on starting the material forage at exactly nine, as we will only have so much time before we have to leave for the park. If you are not interested in making your own drill tool set, just come to the park at ten.
I am really looking forward to meeting everyone and having a good time sharing what I know. See you all there!
If anyone has questions on how to get to massacre and where to park, please feel free to message me directly. Come ten to fifteen minutes early as I will begin the forage at exactly nine with whoever is there.
