Just 15 miles east of Galt off Hwy #104 is Rancho Seco Recreation Area. This is scheduled as a training hike for those who wish to increase their endurance and hiking pace level. It will be a morning hike only, and we should be done by noon. Due to the current drought, the area is dry and brown - not very scenic - but this is a close location to Lodi/Galt/Elk Grove area members and features a nice lake. The targeted pace will be two & 1/2 miles per hour on mostly flat terrain for 7 miles total. Bring your full day pack and plenty of water to train for carrying the weight. Try out any new hiking boots you've gotten. The hiking area is just below the foothills in rangeland and we'll be walking around cattle. Although it isn't pretty this year (usually has green grass/flowers/vernal ponds in wet years) it is peaceful with no traffic noise. Trail is for hikers only - NO DOGS ALLOWED.
Distance: 7 miles total on mostly flat terrain at low elevation. Trails are uneven dirt/gravel - area completely exposed/sunny with few trees.
Difficulty: Will be pushing a moderately fast pace of 25 minutes per mile, but terrain is mostly flat.
Fees: $10 per vehicle ($8 for seniors) so let's carpool.
After hike, members may want to stay and enjoy the shady picnic areas near the lake (which is always kept at full capacity by SMUD.)
