IFIN: Volver

Indie Film Intimate Night (IFIN), presents
VOLVER

Some dead people are hard to ditch. Some leave for many years before returning. Director Pedro Almodovar sprinkles a mostly lighthearted tale with some grave moments as he explores the unfinished business in the lives of his characters. This magical, tragicomic melodrama may be Almodovar's most restrained work to date, but it still features his trademarks: a strong attention to color and detail, a celebration of the trials and tribulations of women, and, of course, the inestimable Carmen Maura. The lovely Penelope Cruz hasn't shone more brightly as she does here.

(R 121 minutes)

The usual IFIN details:

Doors open at 7PM. Movie begins between 7:30 & 7:45.

This event is quasi-potluck. That means you're welcome to bring food and drink for yourself or to share. If you bring something to share, please bring service items too (like platter or bowl, and serving utensils) or give us a heads up about the service items you'll need. If you bring something for yourself, avoid putting it on the big table where the shared food will be and where we'll have plates, napkins, cups, and eating utensils for all.

Release of Liability:

By attending this event you are agreeing to be responsible for your own actions, and you are agreeing that you won't hold the hosts or the group organizers liable for neglect if harm comes to you due to the actions of another person.

NO SHOWS WON'T BE TOLERATED.

Before you start your journey to the meetup, be very sure that you have good directions, a charged cell phone, & our contact number (you'll be sent that # along with the IFIN address via email the night before the event). If you'll be using a GPS device and it's something other than Garmin's brand or Verizon's App, double check that it locates the same place as Google or Yahoo Maps does (WARNING: Magellan has hijacked its users to a place very far away from my address). If you fail to change your RSVP prior to the event, or fail to contact us if you need help finding us, it will all but ruin your chances of being included in a future IFIN event.

Due to the limited number of spaces at IFIN events, some filtering of attendees is practiced. If you haven't previously attended an event in this home, before you do, you will be required to answer the questions in your San Jose Indie Film Meetup group profile along with the questions that appear for the private-home/IFIN event.

Well, I'm glad everyone had a nice time watching Volver and partying on at the IFIN house! I was sitting right here Saturday night trying to texture my Woodland creature with a little elephant skin, when I happened to pass my cursor over the corner of the screen and noticed that it was 10:45 pm and Saturday -- not Friday as I had imagined and I had missed yet another movie and another fun-filled evening with my beloved movie gang.
    I was near despair.

    Hi Bob,

we waited and thought to call but I don't think anyone had your number. In any case, we did wonder what happened to you and now we know.

    See you next time.

    Hi everyone,

I am glad that everyone had a good time. It so much fun to get together and chat and exchange prejudices and bias over snacks, wine and beer. Debbie proposed Lives of Others. I propose: "Departures" from Japan (2008), "The Secret in Their Eyes" from Argentina (2009), "A Separation" from Iran (2011) as well as Central Station and Mon Oncle.

    Comments?

The mark of a good evening is that everyone can speak and even if they do not agree, we can still have a companionable good time.

P.S. where/when do I pay membership dues? The conversation was so good, it slipped my mind to ask!

    January 26, 2014

    • Diane

Dues are only taken at the traditional regular monthly meetup - 2nd Friday of the month - Glenn initiated events.

Last night was a return to fun (LOL). Thanks everyone, and especially our hosts, Mike and Diane. I found this nifty article about the film when I asked Google to tell me what movie the mom was watching near the end: http://rt.com/usa/college-graduates-minimum-wage-174/.

Really good conversation last night. I look forward to our monthly meeting! No better way to spend an evening then with other movie lovers!

Thanks for welcoming the newbie! It was the small touches like pressing pause when I went to the bathroom during the movie that made this meet-up extra special :) I was too tired to suggest a movie for the next meet-up, so now that I'm caffeinated I'm suggesting, "The Lives of Others". I've seen it before, but it's been awhile...and the preview got me thinkin'...
