Saturday Morning Training Hike and Backpacking 101 class at Eisenhower Park

Join us for a medium paced hike (3 to 3.5 miles per hour) at Eisenhower Park. If you’re planning on participating in any of the upcoming backpacking trips now’s a good time to break out the pack and take it out for a practice hike. We’ll hike about 3 miles stopping at the Hillview tower along the way. Be prepared to keep up with the group.

After the hike we’ll meet at one of the pavilions to talk about our upcoming backpacking trips and backpacking equipment- packs, tents, sleeping bags, clothes, stoves, cookware, and the 10 essentials.

As always, wear hiking shoes/boots with good support and bring plenty of water to meet your needs. Dress appropriately for the weather.

Meet near the restrooms at 8:45 am, we leave promptly at 9:00 am. Hike should take about an hour and Backpacking 101 will take a couple of hours. Should be done between noon and 1:00.

Very nice 101, Thanks Dave. By the way I made back a while ago, I went back for another hike and cooked some lunch. I was trying to contact you to let you know I was back but the website was down. Thanks and looking forward for more hikes.

I don't have a back pack. Any recommendations or should I attend class first? Any pictures would be appreciated. One that's easy on neck.

You should attend the first class, I'll cover backpacks then.

Hi we will only participate in the hike since we are not attending any upcoming backpacking hikes. Thanks!

Just to let you all know, Backpacking 101 at Eisenhower is part one of two. The second part will be offered the following weekend, March 8th at Friedrich Wilderness Park. Part one at Eisenhower will cover the 10 Essentials and equipment you'll need for upcoming backpack trips. Part two at Friedrich will cover hydration systems, water filters, stoves, cookware and meal planning. If you're new to backpacking you'll probably want to attend both parts.

I RSVP'd as attending but I don't think I'm quite up to the pace of this hike. However, I'd like to sit in on the backpacking 101 info as I'm a newbie and would like to learn more about backpacking.

Will y'all be meeting up in the pavillion after the hike?

    February 18, 2014

Monica, we'll be meeting in one of the covered picnic areas after the hike, whichever one is not being used. I'm thinking of the covered picnic areas between the parking lanes and across from the restrooms. Just look for a bunch of people with backpacks.
