That looks great! Plus we can discuss with the YARN guy. I am working on getting a speaker / someone with experience in hardware for this weekend...if not, I plan on coming prepared with a lecture! Maybe we should take turns with that? I've pinged a couple professors...I'll let you know the outcome on Sat!

I feel the need for a summary showing the place of parallela in the world of parallel computing, and may be some pointers for a comparison with a wide range of other systems: arduino, lego brick, raspberry pi, nexus4, multicorecpu, gpu, gordon...

Why do Adapteva call the Parallella a supercomputer?

Adapteva: <<The Parallella project is not a board, it's intended to be a long term computing project and community dedicated to advancing parallel computing. The current $99 board aren't considered supercomputers by 2012 standards, but a cluster of 10 Parallella boards would have been considered a supercomputer 10 years ago. Our goal is to put a bona-fida supercomputer in the hands of everyone as soon as possible but the first Parallella board is just the first step. Once we have a strong community in place, work will being on PCIe boards containing multiple 1024-core chips with 2048 GFLOPS of double precision performance per chip. At that point, there should be no question that the Parallella would qualify as a true supercomputing platform.>>

Parallela has a list of project ideas: http://www.parallella.org/Ideas...
    Among them:

    1.4. Hadoop Many-Core Accelerator Support

Summary: many-core accelerator support in Hadoop would provide a significant performance/energy-efficiency boost for applications built using the framework. The project would use the Parallella hardware platform and many-core programming infrastructure as a test and development vehicle.

Expected results: offload of MapReduce operations from Hadoop applications running in a JVM on the host processor, to many-core accelerators like the Epiphany processor on the Parallella platform.

Knowledge prerequisite: C/C++, Java, OpenJDK development, Hadoop.

    Mentor: Yaniv Sapir, Adapteva.

How is that, Jo ? :)

That would be great!...just curious: would you be able to apply on behalf of UCSD ?

      October 10, 2013

    • Jo F.

Yes, I can apply to Parallella University, but it looks like I have to get some students involved as well...and most likely a professor...I'll discuss with the group at today's meeting

Thanks for the idea Jo! :)

I attended the recent "High-Performance and Parallel Computing with R". That talk was awesome! For those who missed it, see:

Now that we had a glimpse at what can be done with one of the world's fastest supercomputers (Gordon: http://www.sdsc.edu/supercomput...), I am curious to check what could be attempted on similar topics in my garage and a few of these $100 board.

    What do you think ?

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
