We're going to Coronado Dog Beach! Rated the nation's best beach by Dr. Beach in part because "like a Hollywood star, Coronado's 1.5 mile-long beach literally sparkles, thanks to the mineral mica glinting in its sand".
Coronado beach is also one of the top ten beaches in the world per Yahoo Travel, and the northern most portion, next to the Naval Air Station, is a dog paradise. It's a wide, sandy beach with shallow surf (perfect for shorter legs) and views from the Hotel del Coronado to Point Loma. It's also THE place to bring your dog surfing and many dogs take lessons here from the Coronado Surfing Academy. Our corgis seem to prefer the simpler pleasures of body surfing and running gleefully with the pack. Who can blame them? If you're a corgi, this is THE place to be seen, and it's one of our groups favorite locations.
Near the entrance is a water fountain for dogs and people, with a hose to use as a shower to rinse off your dog and your feet before getting back in the car. A little further down is a public bathroom and there are plenty of scoop bags and trash cans all along the path and beach.
WHAT TO BRING: BRING water. Consider bringing beach chairs, towels, sunscreen, drinks, umbrellas and some type of shade for your dogs (if it's warm), as they can overheat quickly. It's a long walk in the sand to the off-leash area, so you may want to wheel-in your gear.
DIRECTIONS: From I5, exit onto CA-75S toward Coronado. Turn Left at Orange Ave. Turn Right at Isabella Ave. Turn Right on Ocean BLVD. The beach entrance is at the end of Ocean BLVD. Park on the street. The little grassy area right across from the beach is OFF-LIMITS and people walking dogs on that grass are frequently ticketed. So go around! Also keep your pups on leash until you reach the beach, or you may be looking at a $500 fine!!!
