'Das System' (German) (2011) (Trailer below)

One-Night, One Showing Only  +  Screenwriter Dörte Franke will be available, in person, for a Q&A, after the film!

"Das System - Alles Verstehen Heisst Alles Verzeihen (The System – to understand everything means to forgive everything)"

"Starring the captivating Jacob Matschenz, ,The System, is a self-assured fiction feature debut about a young man who is seduced by power and money when he crosses paths with former agents of the East German secret police.

The once popular seaside town of Rostock, now a bit empty and much less alluring, is where this 20-year-old lives with his widowed mother. He doesn’t know anything about his father or the circumstances of his death. Being a bit of a rebel and a petty thief, he’s easily convinced by a man in a flashy car and suit to become his apprentice. He hopes to solve the mystery of his father’s death that his mother does not want to divulge. But as the full title of the film suggests, understanding comes at a price."

“An extremely well-researched, complex political thriller: shrewd, suspenseful and believable.”

“Jacob Matschenz plays brilliantly multi-layered in this mix of genres: political thriller, social drama and coming-of-age story.”

“Marc Bauder’s feature film debut combines a suspenseful, up-to-date economic thriller with questions about East Germany’s lingering past.”

Creator of this Event: Robb

When and Where:  Unhosted but folks can meet each other in the lobby before the show.

Das System was an subtle yet intense mystery/drama about an East German teenager beginning to unravel the threads of Stasi associations of his dead father and working mother, while struggling to find his place as an adult in a difficult environment. In the film, and as in real life (as learned by the screenwriter who was there for Q&A after the film), the former Stasi mambers are very much alive and influential today. (Akin to the Mafia, it is present, powerful, active and goes largely unpunished and unnoticed.) With excellent cinematography, acting, and screenwriting, the plot moved along with the help of interesting characters and roles. Our protagonist must sift through a murky mix of truth, lies, greed, honesty, bribery, manipulation, misdirection, and loyalty woven between his parent's past and a shadowy benefactor who once worked with his dead father.

    Thoughtful and well written.

The King Hu film last night at MoPA was great…as expected. :) Can anyone comment on how this film, 'Das System', was?

Just a heads up that this event will be unhosted…but folks can look for each other in the lobby before the show.

I've also set up a Kung Fu film meetup for this same night and although both films will probably be great…I can't pass up Kung Fu on the big screen.

    Have a great night everyone!
