Announcing a new Meetup for San Diego Japanese Language & Culture Group!

What: Bon Odori Celebration
When: Saturday, July 30,[masked]:00 PM

Where: Buddhist Temple of San Diego
2929 Market St
San Diego, CA 92102

Called the Festival of Joy, O-Bon is one of the most important holidays for Japanese people (right behind the New Year). Bon Odori is a community dance ("An Evening of Traditional Music and Dance to Express Gratitude to Those Who Made our Lives Prosper" says the temple). It's basically outdoor Japanese folk dancing with hundreds of others as the sun sets on a warm
summer eve.

It is one of the few times you can see a bunch of people wearing kimonos and yukatas. The venue will feature live taiko beat for the folk dancing, stands to buy bento and other goodies, plus a historical exhibition. It's a lot of fun. And feel free to wear your own happi or yukata if you like.

While this won't be a formal meetup event, a number of us annually attend and it has become something of a meetup tradition.  You'll likely see a number of us walking around, snacking or folk dancing, and we'll gather around 8:30 to make plans to go to dinner.  If you have trouble finding us among the many attendees, please give me a call at [masked] anytime after 6:30.

The location is the San Diego Buddhist Temple on 29th and Market. Listen for the music and taiko drums and you'll get there. Park on surrounding streets as the event takes place on the temple's parking lot.

The event goes from 6:00 until 8:30 PM. You can buy food, such as Japanese sweets, sushi, chicken bowls, and more. The dancing begins at 6:30 PM. Admission is free.

Check it out!
