From: Bunta M.

Announcing a new Meetup for San Diego Japanese Language & Culture Group!

What: BON ODORI Festival in San Diego

When: August 1,[masked]:00 PM

Buddhist Temple of San Diego
2929 Market St
San Diego, CA 92102

This event information was put together by our meetup member Jay:

Called the Festival of Joy, O-Bon is one of the most important
holidays for Japanese people (right behind New Year's). Bon
Odori is a community dance ("An Evening of Traditional Music
and Dance to Express Gratitude to Those Who Made our Lives
Prosper" says the temple).

This is one of the few times you can see a bunch of people
wearing yukata. The venue will feature live taiko beat for
dancing, bento, shaved ice, a historical exhibition, and crafts
for the kids. It's a lot of fun and attendance goes will into
the hundreds. Wear your happi or yukata if you so wish.

The location is the San Diego Buddhist Temple on 29th and
Market. Listen for the taiko and you'll get there. Park on
surrounding streets as the event takes place on the temple's
parking lot.

The event goes from 5:00 PM to around 8:30 PM. The dancing
begins at 6:30 PM. Admission is free. We won?t formally meet
as a group here, but a good number of us attend every year.
Feel free to come dance, eat and say ?hi? to any face you
recognize. We will be meeting as a group for an after party
when O-Bon finishes.

See for
more details.

Details for the after party will be posted later.
