Can anyone give me some guidance? I am now registered to run the 2014 SD RnR 1/2 marathon, but I had cholectomy surgery to repair hallux rigidus of my left toe. I thought it was semi-successful with about 50% of the cartilage retained and drilled holes in the surrounding bones with the hope of stimulating new cartilage. The surgeon did clear me to start running again, but after experiencing extra pain lately, I got a new x-ray last week which revealed almost complete disappearance of the cartilage in the big toe joint. I am at a loss as to how that much cartilage could have just disappeared in a two month period of time. Could the bone have grown over existing cartilage giving less visibility on the x-ray of hidden cartilage or is the cartilage just gone for good and what are my options aside from a bone fusion on the joint? Thank you for any insights or assistance you could provide me. james

UCSD Ortho Dr. Sonja Ahmed. She's a great surgeon who had given me high hopes for recovery. She was a college star as a pole vaulter while she went to med school. I just don't understand how the toe cartilage could have disappeared according to the X-ray in just two months. Is there any info out there recently of cartilage rejuvenation therapies or relief for hallux rigidus for long distance runners?

I had my last surgery on January 9th and I am up to running 90 minutes and 10miles without stopping, so I can compete in the June 1st RnR, but I have to determine what my next steps will be for my foot situation and I am also working on a documentary and books about my run last year after enduring 3 near death experiences and 14 days in the hospital.
