Beach Volleyball @ Ocean Beach on Wednesdays (5:30 p.m.)

8/25/14 Important Update:  I previously announced that these Wed. volleyball events at Ocean Beach during daylight savings time in 2014 were being cancelled, due to my inability to transport the nets there.  However, Tony Son has graciously agreed to transport the nets for at least a few more weeks, so for now Wed. volleyball in Ocean Beach is NOT cancelled, and we will continue to meet as usual until further notice.  Tony will make a decision after a few weeks, toward the end of September, whether it is worth it to continue setting up nets for additional weeks while we still have Daylight Savings Time, or whether it is getting too dark too early, therefore not leaving enough sunlight to make it worthwhile to travel there and to set up the nets, just to play for a very short time.  As the end of September approaches, be on the lookout for additional messages about whether or not we will still be playing there, before going there, so you don't travel there only to find out we are not playing there any more.  Thanks, Tony!  -Brian Frankel

For those of you who want even more volleyball than our regular games on Saturday mornings in Coronado, we will be adding beach volleyball on Wednesdays at Ocean Beach, during Daylight Savings Time. The Ocean Beach volleyball on Wednesdays will start on Wed., 4/2/14, and will continue every Wednesday evening until close to when Daylight Savings Time ends. The nets will be set up at approximately 5:30 p.m., and we continue playing until shortly after sunset, when it gets too dark to play any more.

Come out and play!! Enjoy the beach, get some sand between your toes (and maybe in your ears if you like to dive..)

For newcomers, note that this group is social volleyball. We all like to play but we're not serious hardcore (check out the 2s and 3s beach volleyball group if that sounds like you).

The nets will be set up in the same place where this Meetup group used to play when we played in Ocean Beach before moving to Coronado. Park in the Dog Beach parking lot, then go south. Look for some combination of blue, orange and/or yellow nets, at or near where the permanent wooden volleyball posts are, close to the new bathrooms. It’s the beach area just south of the corner of Spray Street and Brighton Ave. Google “2100 Spray St, San Diego CA” for a map. We’re likely to have 2 or more nets set up, with the number of nets depending on how many people sign up in advance on the Meetup web site.  We're usually south of the parking lot, and east of the bathrooms.  If there's not enough room there to set up, then look for some or all of our nets closer to the water, west of the parking lot, and north of the bathrooms.

If it's still hot out that late in the day, consider bringing sand socks (or just regular socks). Otherwise, just bring yourself. Oh yeah, and sun screen & water.

If it's raining, the game is likely to be canceled.

If possible, we’d like to collect a "fun buck" (or more, if you're so moved) from each player each day. If you want to play regularly, you can pay for a month or more at a time. This is completely optional, but it enables us to buy (and maintain!) all our equipment. You can pay at the game. -- Thanks!

We often go out as a group to eat dinner at some nearby restaurant in Ocean Beach when we finish playing volleyball shortly after sunset. If you are interested in joining us for dinner, bring money for dinner, and possibly a change of clothes or warmer clothing to wear.

Note that the Wednesday volleyball games in Ocean Beach are not in any way associated with the City of Coronado.

For more information, contact Brian Frankel by cell [masked]) or email ([masked]).

P.S.: If any regular members would like to help out by bringing 1 or more nets on some Wednesdays, please let Brian know.  It's possible that if volunteers can bring nets there and get them set up prior to 5:30 p.m., then play can begin prior to 5:30 p.m.

You guys are early. Nets usually don't get setup before 5:30, but you can help Tony when he gets there.

There's 4 nets set up where we usually play and a bunch of kids hanging out. Don't see anyone from our group yet. Still on? Playing elsewhere?

(Part 2 of 2): I’ll bring nets to O.B. on 8/13. Prior to my car breaking, I had planned on being out of town and arranged for Tony to transport nets through 8/20, so it’s covered until 8/20. Starting on 8/20, we need someone taking the nets from O.B. at the conclusion of play, and bringing them to Coronado on 8/23. If you can assist, please reply and "sign up" on the Meetup group's main discussion forum, where I have posted a copy of this message as a new discussion (don't reply to this message in the discussions for individual events where I have posted copies of this message for the few events coming up in Aug.). State how many nets you can take/drop off, and on what dates ... where you will be picking them up from, and where you will be dropping them off at. Keep in mind we need volunteers who will be at both Coronado and O.B. on successive dates. If questions, call me:[masked]-1097. Thanks. -Brian

(Part 1 of 2): The group needs help transporting nets. I've been transporting them recently. However, yesterday the white Mercury Villager minivan I have been using to transport nets broke down, and it won’t be fixed any time soon. My/Pam’s other cars aren’t good for transporting nets. Therefore, I can't transport the nets any more. The group needs volunteers to come forward to help transport the nets back and forth between Coronado and O.B. You don't need to take all the nets if you can't, but it would be nice if, for example, we had 3 people each taking 2 nets. You don't need to commit yourself to doing this "permanently", either; if we have enough volunteers, we can rotate (e.g., 1 person can take the nets for a month, and then someone else can take the nets for the next month, etc.).
