SATURDAY: YUBA RIVER GORGE & OLIVE OIL
Short Hike: Yuba River
2 miles • Easy: short path, but at times uneven or narrow
Tasting: Apollo Olive Oil
Welcome! After a short meet and greet we begin our adventure with a trip to the beautiful hillside olive orchards of Apollo Olive Oil. The press operator and manager will show us his trees, mill, and press followed by an explanation of olive oil tasting, with a flight of mild to spicy blends.
After a picnic lunch in the shade of the orchard, it's time for a swim! We'll take you to our
favorite location on the Yuba River Gorge where you can swim, hike the huge river rocks, explore upstream, or just sit by the beach and enjoy the sun.
Once our skin is golden and our fingertips look like raisins, we'll dry off and head home for showers and a quick rest before the night's festivities! We can head to the local theater for a catered dinner (stage-side), featuring local wine, before an optional live performance of Monteverdi's "Il Ritorno D'Ulisse" or enjoy the stage-side dinner then a walk in the cool evening air. Opera Tickets are not included and range from $15-$50.
SUNDAY: DAY HIKE & WINE-TASTING ORGANIC DINNER
Hike: Feather Falls, Bald Rock Dome Trail or Sierra Buttes
6-9 miles • Moderate difficulty: rolling to mountainous terrain
Tasting: Grant & Eddie Wines
After a breakfast of fresh croissants, fruit, coffee and tea, we'll head toward the Plumas National Forest for an epic hike visiting either Bald Rock Dome or Feather Falls. Bald Rock Dome is a spectacular granite dome overlooking a steep trail zig-zaging down to Yuba river. Feather falls are a delicate feathery veil-like waterfall misting down from 410 feet above the North Fork Feather River canyon. Unlike many California waterfalls that are greatly reduced in summer, Feather Falls have an ample water supply even in summertime. We'll enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch on the trail. Pass around fresh-baked bread, artisan cheeses and sun-ripened fruit. It doesn't get much better than this!
After our hike, we'll head home for showers and a bit of time to relax.
Then……dinner!!! Prepare for an amazing 4-course extravaganza of local delicacies, all expertly prepared by a talented and passionate local chef. Think homemade cheeses, locally-raised meats, home-baked bread, organic garden veggies, wild greens and more. From appetizer to dessert you’ll get a true feeling of what north Yuba has to offer.
And then the wine!! The dinner expertly paired with local Renaissance wines. They've agreed to let us dig deep into their cellar (!) and select some of their rare aged bottles to match our meal. We'll be able to look out over their vineyards as we taste - a real local experience.
Harvest vine-ripened melons (this is done by throwing them at each other), tomatoes, summer squash and other organic vine-ripened fruits and veggies (to take home). Pay for what u pick ;)
We got an amazing deal on the event. Normally, doing all these events would either a) not be possible because our hosts are real farmers/craftsmen and don't generally have time to entertain, or b) would come out to be much more expensive. However, we can do it all for:
...$219 camping (bring your own gear)
...$249 in rustic cabins by lake (4-person room with bunks - bring your own sheets)
...$295 in charming Bed & Breakfast (double room, limited single rooms available for supplemental fee)
This includes virtually everything:
- 2 breakfasts
- 1 gourmet picnic lunch
- 2 dinners (a wine-reception/light dinner $45 value; and a 4-course chef's wine-tasting dinner $85 value)
2 NIGHTS ACCOMMODATION
If you can't do the listed price, you can try and find your own accommodations, but the closest hotel is about 60 miles away and you'd miss out on a breakfast of fresh croissants delivered to your door every morning and the sweetness of your rural hosts.
Reservations and a $50 deposit are required to guarantee your space. Accommodation is extremely difficult to organize, so please RSVP before Thursday 8/29. Trip is run by the California arm of Piccolina Adventures. Thanks! We're looking forward to an amaaazing weekend!
