South Kettle Moraine Forest XC Skiing Weekend

South Kettle Moraine Forest

Cross Country Ski Weekend

Saturday, February 23 and Sunday, February 24, 2013

Want to give X-C skiing a try?  Looking for a close, inexpensive destination with groomed and marked trails?  Then come explore the Nordic ski trails in the South Kettle Moraine State Forest, just north of the Wisconsin border.  Come for just the day, or stay the weekend!

There are 82 km of trails for both beginners and experienced skiers at this 20,000-acre state forest.   See the trail map on the following page or by following this link:

www.trailville.com/wiki/WI_Kettle_Moraine_South_Nordic_Trails.  There is a warming center, ski rental, and a country store down the road for a delicious hot lunch of soup or sandwiches.

Meet:  This is a self drive, show and go trip, so contact some of your ski buddies and make your plans!  Each morning we’ll meet at LaGrange General Store at 9:30.  For those renting skis, the rental shop at the LaGrange General Store opens at 9:00 am.  Directions and ski rental reservations can be found at www.backyardbikes.com .

Cost:  $4.00 per day trail pass plus $10.00 per car Wisconsin state park sticker

For those interested in spending one or both nights, we have five (5) rooms blocked for Sanctuary Ski Club at: Hampton Inn, 40 West Hidden Trail, Elkhorn, WI  53121

This is a clean, new hotel with pool, hot tub and hot breakfast included (omelets, pancakes, etc).   The room rate of $79.00 plus tax per night, double occupancy is guaranteed for bookings made February 6 or earlier.

You are responsible for making your own reservations by calling[masked]-2360.  Cancellations can be made with no penalty up to 24 hours prior to arrival date.

XC skiing and Winter Trek weekend FAQs

How long will we be out skiing or snowshoeing?

What happens if there is no snow?

We have the option at both locations to hike if there is not enough snow to XC ski or snowshoe. We intend to exercise that option.

Please check with the trip leaders the evening prior to find out what is going on.

If you plan to stay overnight, the hotels will allow you to cancel your reservations with no penalty up to 24 hours prior to scheduled arrival.

Are most people staying one night or two?

Your trip leaders are spending two nights at the hotel. Since this is a "show and go" event, we don’t have details about who is planning to come or what their intentions are. We are happy to collect and share this information if you notify us by e-mail at [masked].

Will we be dining together?

oThe hotels provide breakfast. There is no plan to meet at a specific time.

o

We plan to find someplace close to the trails for lunch.

o

Since this is a "show and go" event, we don’t have details about how many would like to join us for dinner or what their dining preference/restrictions are. We will make decisions as a group when we are all assembled. Individuals are free to make their own plans.

o

If you are interested in meeting up with the trip leaders on Friday evening, please e-mail us.

What’s the easiest way for me to get event updates?

E-mail us at [masked] and let us know that you want to receive e-mail updates.

Everywhere we plan to go has loop trails. We plan to select a loop for the morning outing which we should be able to complete in two or three hours. Our plan is to have lunch together. Those that are interested in doing another loop after lunch may do so. Your trip leaders may or may not accompany you. You also have the option to continue on your own when the group breaks for lunch.

We’ve put together the following additional information based on some questions we’ve been asked:

This was a fabulous time! I'm a cross country skiier, as a result of Diane and Debbie's leadership on this trip. They instructed us, as we skiied, if we desired it. I finally learned how to go up and down hills, along with how to get up after falls. The lunch spot was unique and had excellent food. The partying at night included dancing in Lake Geneva after dinner. Only Debbie can get us to go out dancing when we want to give in to sleep after dinner. See our picture posted from the photo booth at Fat Cats.

Hey, everyone! Looking forward to seeing you this weekend. So far the XC trails are not open, but we're still keeping our fingers crossed for snow. We'll hike if we can't XC. We are planning on going to Charlie O's for dinner Saturday night. Let us know if you'd like to join us for that so we can make the appropriate reservations.

Hi Debbie. Too bad about the weather. Lets hope there will be more snow over the week! No need for a dinner reservation for me as I am heading back after skiing. Thanks.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
