Metrilus GmbH - 3-D Range Imaging Applications

Hey Santa Barbara Machine Learners,

We have a couple of guest presenters from out of town--all the way from Erlangen, Germany--who are going to share the work they are doing at Metrilus GmbH ( , and its applications in real-time 3-D range imaging.

The presenters, Christian and Michael, have shared the following details about their talk:

Real-time 3-D range imaging including Time-of-Flight cameras and sensors from PrimeSense (e.g. Kinect) enable a whole new field of applications. The talk will focus on possible applications of this technology within the health care- and industrial sector. We will introduce the benefits of this technology and show selected practical examples based on these type of sensors. These examples include multi-3-D camera applications for robot human interaction, respiratory motion gating and finger tracking / gesture control. The talk will also cover some topics about the challenges of applying classical 2-D algorithms to real-time 3-D data. Furthermore, basic software tools for range camera calibration and an SDK providing a unified interface for all various sensors are introduced.

    Let me comment a little bit on what applications we will talk about and what you can expect from the talk and demos. We try to cover a whole bunch of possible applications for real-time 3D range imaging. Although we have a strong focus on medical applications like 3D endoscopy, respiratory motion gating, patient positioning and others we also work on projects within the automotive or industrial industry. There will be a live demo of our gesture control, which basically detects hands and fingers and uses these information to interact with the computer. We will also talk about real time motion capturing for collision detection or body scanning. There probably will also be some comments on calibration and general data quality of various time of flight cameras.
