October 24 is Food Day which is a nationwide celebration and a movement for healthy, affordable and sustainable food. Two events are planned in Santa Barbara that are free and open to the public; one in the afternoon and one in the evening.
Celebration at Community Action Commission (CAC) of Santa Barbara County’s Back Door Deli at 315 Camino Del Remedio from 11 am to 1 pm featuring local farmers and chefs, food demonstrations, free healthy samples, raffle prizes, garden tours, a composting demonstration, and activities that inspire people to “eat real”. Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) serve as honorary co-chairs of the national Food Day advisory committee. Locally, Supervisors Salud Carbajal and Doreen Farr have co-sponsored a resolution declaring October 24 Food Day in Santa Barbara County and Dr. Takashi Wada, Public Health Department Director, will deliver opening remarks at the Food Day celebration. Gerri French , registered dietitian at Sansum Clinic and creator of the Santa Barbara Food and Farm Adventures will share information on dining out healthfully in Santa Barbara to reduce risk of disease and enhance longevity. Gerri will promote Culinary Medicine found in fresh local food packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber. Included in this free event is food tasting, review of menus and opportunities to win gift certificates to Santa Barbara restaurants and cafes.
