A medical “page-turner” that traces one doctor’s “remarkable journey to the essence of medicine” (The San Francisco Chronicle).

San Francisco’s Laguna Honda Hospital is the last almshouse in the country, a descendant of the Hôtel-Dieu (God’s hotel) that cared for the sick in the Middle Ages in Paris. Ballet dancers and rock musicians, professors and thieves—“anyone who had fallen, or, often, leapt, onto hard times” and needed extended medical care—ended up here. So did Victoria Sweet, who came for two months and stayed for twenty years.

Laguna Honda, relatively low-tech but human-paced, gave Sweet the opportunity to practice a kind of attentive medicine that has almost vanished. Gradually, the place transformed the way she understood her work. Alongside the modern view of the body as a machine to be fixed, her extraordinary patients evoked an older idea, of the body as a garden to be tended. God’s Hotel tells their story and the story of the hospital itself, which, as efficiency experts, politicians, and architects descended, determined to turn it into a modern “health care facility,” revealed its own surprising truths about the essence, cost, and value of caring for the body and the soul.

  • Bonnie D.

I'm assuming you will email if there is an opening?

    June 30, 2014

    • Meredith

You have to sign up, RSVP, for a meeting--even if it's full. Then, if someone else can't come, you're on the waitlist, and you will be emailed and told there's an opening for you. Hope this makes sense.

Not sure if i'llmake it. Too bad, since I taught hildegard in my European sacred class!

    June 24, 2014

    • Meredith

Sorry to miss you. The titles are all posted as they are chosen--well, maybe 2 days later--on our home page. Just below the next meeting is a list of scheduled dates. I fill in titles as we decide on them. Then I send email notifications of the next book after each meeting--again, about 2 days later.

      ok, thanks!...

How often do you fill up? Do people to know when to sign up to make it onto the list? Why the limit on numbers?

    June 25, 2014

    • Meredith

We fill up frequently, but some people cancel just before the meeting and the waitlisted people are invited in. Many people sign up ahead of time--sometimes 'way ahead--because they know they like the group. Even 20 seems just too big sometimes. We want real interaction between folks.

  • Jodi D.

How will I know if I move up to attending versus being on the wait-list?

    June 24, 2014

    • Meredith

I think the website notifies you by email.

    June 9, 2014

We read that last fall. I'm sure some of us would love to discuss it with you if you read it, though.

So excited to read this book. My church group in the late 70s visited the patients at Laguna Honda. I remember the pink walled red roofed buildings.

    Excited to read this!
